Kiwi Message Buffer

$

0

We have two syslog servers and use a F5 to load balance between the two. In total they receive around 45 million messages a day.We have around a dozen rules that forward messages onto a security appliance or splunk and it can take around 30 minutes before those messages arrive. It can also take 30 minutes for any emails to end up in a users mailbox.

As soon as we start the syslog service the message count on the buffer starts to climb and eventually the overflow queue increase. We haven't checked the stats for a while but one of the servers had a overflow queue count of 125,000! It is a VM server running Windows 2003, 2 CPU's and 4Gb RAM.

Here are the stats from the first hour of starting the syslog service

Kiwi Syslog Server Setup Window is Blank

$

The program was originally setup before I started working here. Recently I was asked to have some data emailed to the IT here, well I opened up the interface, and the Kiwi Syslog Server Setup window is blank, except for the menu items at the top and the buttons at the bottom right.

After some searching around on google, I figured out that the interface was missing a lot of stuff.

Besides the setup interface being blank, the server functions and is performing email tasks that were previously setup.

Any suggestions on resolving this issue?

Kiwi Syslog + PFsense (parsing firewall log from 2 lines to 1 help)

PROBLEM - pfSense syslogs for firewall event is split into two lines when it is sent to Kiwi syslog app.

Is there a way to edit configuration or parsing script to parse the pfSense event as one similar to what the Splunk app can do see link http://www.basementpctech.com/content/pfsense-log-analysis-splunk

I understand that this is a PFsense tcpdump/issue, but I have already tried changing link http://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/1938 without any luck, it just don't work, tried all combinations of changes without any luck.

Pfsense version = 2.0.1-RELEASE, (amd64) , built on Mon Dec 12 18:16:13 EST 2011 ,FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE-p6

I would really appreciate any help with this, as I have already exhasted searching for a working soloution using Kiwi Syslog, and the only thing holding me back from purchasing this application.

Appreciate any help on this..........

Filtering out certain messages in Kiwi Syslog...

$

Hello,

I am in a situation where I need to filter out a certain string. It is a little complicated however. The string(s) I am trying to filter out usually looks like this:

"port D10-High collision or drop rate."

D10 is a device bay in a chassis and that is what we are really interested in here. There are 16 device bays so it can be D1, D2, D3....D16.

The only problem is that there is no space between D10 and "-High"

And we WOULD like to keep getting messaged that dont have the Dx part in it so we cant just filter out "collision or drop rate."

Is the only way to do this by putting 16 separate filters like so: ...?

"D1-High"

"D2-High"

"D3-High"

...."D16-High"

or is there a wildcard we can put in place of the number? Catch is that sometimes it could be a single digit (1-9) or it could be a double digit (10-16).

You input is appreciated. Thank you.

All events forward to another host

Hi,

I have a stream of cisco event coming into Kiwi Syslog and I have filtered out some traffic to limit what I want to forward to another unix host. I have kiwi outputting to a display and writing to a log file and both are recording only the filtered events. When I check my syslog on the target unix host, all event are being forwarded and not just the filtered events. Does "Forward to another hosts" send all events and ignore the filtering or have I am I doing something silly ? I have recreated my settings and moved them up and down my list of captures.

Kiwi Syslog Complex Text Parsing

I am trying to quiet down my kiwi syslog server a bit. I have reporting working well for several functions.

I have it alerting on any service "entered the stopped state" but this is making my server noisy.

I want to exclude "The Application Experience service" from sending an alert, but can't seem to get the text to parse properly to do this.

I have made my rule like so, but it's not working properly.

Am I doing this right, or should I be doing this another way?

Does anyone else notify on services stopping?

Thanks.og_setup

Log Forwarder for Windows

$

Using Kiwi Syslog (ver. 9.3) with log forwarder for windows (ver 1.1). Have one 2003 server that will not forward events of any type to the syslog server. All other servers in environment, both 2003 and 2008, will forward to syslog server. Have made exceptions in firewall rules, opened up port 514 and turned off firewall all together. Still no go. Test messages can be created, but not sent and actual events show up in security log (unsuccessful log in, event id 529) but are not forwarded. Any ideas on what to check next or is this just an unhappy old server that will not cooperate?

syslog_manager.exe 9.4.0.1 will not open correctly on windows 8.1. The process starts and can be seen in task manager, but closes a few second later. No GUI is seen at all not even the splash screen or the notification area icon.

there are no logs inside:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Syslogd\Dated logs

C:\Program Files (x86)\Syslogd\Logs

i tried calling (Service – Debug start-up: www.kiwisyslog.com/help/syslogd7/index.html?adv_reg_servicedebugstart_up.htm):

syslog_manager.exe DEBUGSTART

syslog_manager.exe /DEBUGSTART

syslog_manager.exe -DEBUGSTART

syslog_manager.exe --DEBUGSTART

but still no log or debug log files are created in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Syslogd directory or any of its sub directories.

i checked the window event log and found the same four error reoccurring every time the syslog_manager.exe is started up

Kiwi Syslog Viewe Message Pattern Syntax

$

Hello Thwackers!!!

Quick question... I want to filter using excludes in the Syslog Viewer.  To be clear, I don't want to eliminate the messages from Syslog - I just want to filter inside the viewer for them.

For example, I can include only messages with this IP by putting %192.1.3.4% in the "Message Pattern" box.

I can EXCLUDE messages with this IP by putting !%192.1.3.4% in the "Message Pattern" box.

What I want to do is exclude an IP AND exclude a partial user name.  So in english:  I want only messages that do NOT include the IP address of 192.1.3.4 and also do NOT include any user with 'anon' in the name.

Can this be done?

I have tried to no avail:

!%192.1.3.4%.!%anon*%

!%192.1.3.4%.!%anon?%

!%192.1.3.4% & !%anon*%

!%192.1.3.4% && !%anon*%

..and other combinations of the above...

Thanks in advance!!!

Does Kiwi Syslog Server Support Receiving Syslog over TCP via RFC3195

$

We are currently trying to migrate all UDP senders of syslog to TCP.  Our fortigate security appliances only support the RFC 3195 standard for syslog over TCP.  syslog-ng does not support this and rsyslog says that they support RFC 3195, but it is not working.  Please, any assistance with this request would be appreciated.  Running syslog with UDP is no longer an option.

Thanks in advance.

Limiting Log Retention

Hello.

I've installed the free version of Kiwi Syslog (I'm a long-time user of CatTools), and am unable to find a setup preference which tells Kiwi how long to retain syslog messages.  I don't have unlimited drive space, and only want to keep certain messages for a limited period.

More specifically, need to keep the NAT translation messages from my firewall, so I can track down inappropriate use by students.  These messages come at a rate of over 20,000/hr.  I only want to keep them for a week.

Thanks

Multi-core multithread support in the future?

We having been using Kiwi Syslog for years because of its flexibility and ease of use.  It works well for alerting on syslog and traps, but we having been running into scalability issues the last year or so.   We have tried everyone suggestions to get above the 15 million messages per hour mark.  Syslog-ng appears to be the only viable option, but lacks the simplicity of managing advanced rules.  Are there any plans for Kiwi to be able to take advantage of multi-cpu/multi-core hardware, or run multiple instances on the same box?

Kiwi Syslog Server Log Location won't change.

$

0

Hey all,

I have recently taken over a sys admin position, and am required to move the location of the Kiwi Syslog Server logs to another file location. I have never used it prior.  However, I can't seem to move the file.

Kiwi Syslog Server 9.2.1 (Free version.)

Windows Server 2003 SP2 (WORKGROUP)(VM)

Current configuration:

Log to Log File

Path and file name:  C:\Program Files\Syslogd\Logs\SyslogCatchAll.txt

If I test the configuration, I can see the test messages in the location noted about.  However, after I apply the settings, the older location (a CIFS share) continues to receive the actual syslogs of the devices we monitor.

There are three local users, all of which show the same configuration.

I have tried deleting and recreating the Log to Log File rule.  No change.

I have tried starting and stopping the service.  No change.

I have tried exporting the system settings, and then reimporting them.  No change.

I have tried searching the registery for the old location.  Nothing found.

I have two theories.

1.  The settings are locked for some reason.

2.  The settings are stored somewhere else.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Aaron
