Kiwi Syslog not receiving SNMP Traps

$

Hi all.

I have just installed Kiwi Syslog Server 9.5 on a test machine to evaluate its suitability for a project I'm working on. It's currently still running in 14-day Evaluation mode.

We can't seem to get it to receive SNMP traps at all. No matter what we do, netstat shows nothing listening on UDP port 162. SNMPv1 traps are being sent to the server, and we can see them in Wireshark arriving at the server, but Kiwi isn't listening for them.

In desparation, we tried enabling the Windows SNMP Trap service (although we understand this isn't required?) and this 'absorbed' the traps, but nothing appeared in Kiwi.

The test machine is running Windows 7 (32-bit) with the Windows Firewall switched off.

Should the 14-day Evaluation be able to receive SNMP traps?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Event Log Forwarder - Where is the Audit Failure Type?

Hi There,

I'm trialing Kiwi Syslog and I'm having trouble with the Log Forwarder and Security Event Log.  When I click on the Security Log I don't see Audit Success or Audit Failure as an event type.  It just has Error, Warning and Information.  If I manually edit the CFG file and add <int>16</int> it works, but then it gets overwritten if I make a change.  Am I doing something wrong?  How can I see Audit Failure as an Event Type?

Thanks,

Kiwi Syslog Server 9.4.1

I have an older version of Kiwi installed on an old server that is being retired.  I've installed it on the new server, but I cannot get it to display anything.  I exported settings from the other server and imported on this one, then went to Inputs-UDP and set the correct IP to bind it to.

  • I've gone through ALL the steps at SolarWinds Knowledge Base :: Kiwi Syslog Daemon is not receiving messages and Kiwi Syslog Server but had no luck getting it to work.
  • I know for a fact that messages are being received -- when I run WireShark with the filter, "udp port 514", I see PLENTY of traffic from my firewall.  Both my firewall and VPN device are sending syslog messages to the old server and the new one.  The old server is still working just fine.
  • Windows Firewall on the new server is completely disabled.
  • I loaded the default rules and settings but still had no luck.
  • I disabled all DNS resolution - no luck.
  • There is no Errorlog.txt in C:\Program Files (x86)\Syslogd.
  • Test messages from within Kiwi work just fine.
  • I finally uninstalled Kiwi, rebooted the server, then reinstalled, and have the same problem.

Kiwi is running as LocalService -- I wondered if that might be the problem, but that's how it's running on the old server as well.

I'm at a loss as to what to do now.  I tried contacting support, but since I'm using the free version I was directed here.

Does Kiwi syslog server support TLS 1.2? If so how to enable it?

I am trying to connect to kiwi syslog server in secure TCP mode. From my client side (c# code) I try to connect to kiwi syslog sever using TLS 1.2 protocol. But SSL Handshake from server is set to TLS 1.0

I installed kiwi server in Windows 7 SP1 and enabled TLS 1.2 in the system by modifying the system registry.

SSL handshakes captured using Network monitor are given below

Client HandShake

Client side code( c#)

System.Net.ServicePointManager.SecurityProtocol = SecurityProtocolType.Tls12;

var tcpClient = new TcpClient(hostname, port);

var tcpClientStream = tcpClient.GetStream();

var sslStream = new SslStream(tcpClientStream, false, ValidateServerCertificate)

{

        ReadTimeout = timeout,

        WriteTimeout = timeout

};

sslStream.AuthenticateAsClient(hostname, new X509CertificateCollection(), System.Security.Authentication.SslProtocols.Tls12, false);

How to open old log files with Syslog Web Access?

I have logs saved to separate files every day.  At the end of the quarter, I will need to look thru the logs to collect statistics for the report.

Is there a way for me to use Syslog Web Access to look thru the old log files and filter out information that I need?

I am using Syslog v9.5

I have setup my KIWI syslog server to listen for SNMP traps, successfully.  Is there a way to setp KIWI, or an available action to forward the SNMP traps to other SNMP trap receivers as KIWI receives them.

Thanks

snmptrap -> syslog, garbled MACaddress

$

Hi.

We use the snmp trap feature of syslogd, receiving and forwarding SNMP traps as syslog messages.

The following problem was discovered with syslogd 9.4.x. It is still present in 9.5.0, but slightly different. See update below.

The attached file shows two network packets captured with wireshark. Both packets appears to be completely valid packets, and also decodes perfectly with the appropriate mibs loaded in wireshark.

Kiwi syslogd somehow manages to mistreat one of the packets. This is illustrated below, where you can see that cldcClientMacAddress.0 reads as ‘L?XÉöh’ in one case, and ‘Hex String=70 18 8B 44 B3 4F’ in the other. Obviously, we prefer the latter parsing of the data.

This problem is very visible to us, as approximately one third to one half of all client MAC addresses are unintelligible in our logs.

The source of the messages are SNMPtraps from a Cisco WLC wireless controller.

The captured packets (in the attachment) are taken from the inbound snmptraps to the KIWI syslog server.

The Kiwi Display function shows the same corrupted MAC as shown below.

We have not managed to figure out any pattern in corrupted/noncorrupted packets.

Also the AP MAC address shows the same corruption. There is no obvious correlation between corruption of one or the other.

(I.e. if a client MAC  is corrupted this does not imply that the AP MAC is corrupted and vice versa.)

We *think* a MAC address coming through as corrupted always comes through as corrupted.

UPDATE:

After having updated syslogd to 9.5.0, *all* MAC-addresses now arrives garbled. I do prefer consistency over randomness. But still....

I have found no way to decode the received text as a valid MAC address.

None of the options in the options under 'Input | SNMP' appear to have any impact on this issue.

Is this a bug, or an intended feature? If the latter, how am I meant to parse the received data?

Kiwi Syslog Server Log Location won't change.

$

Hey all,

I have recently taken over a sys admin position, and am required to move the location of the Kiwi Syslog Server logs to another file location. I have never used it prior.  However, I can't seem to move the file.

Kiwi Syslog Server 9.2.1 (Free version.)

Windows Server 2003 SP2 (WORKGROUP)(VM)

Current configuration:

Log to Log File

Path and file name:  C:\Program Files\Syslogd\Logs\SyslogCatchAll.txt

If I test the configuration, I can see the test messages in the location noted about.  However, after I apply the settings, the older location (a CIFS share) continues to receive the actual syslogs of the devices we monitor.

There are three local users, all of which show the same configuration.

I have tried deleting and recreating the Log to Log File rule.  No change.

I have tried starting and stopping the service.  No change.

I have tried exporting the system settings, and then reimporting them.  No change.

I have tried searching the registery for the old location.  Nothing found.

I have two theories.

1.  The settings are locked for some reason.

2.  The settings are stored somewhere else.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Aaron

How to Split Log Files by IP Address and Date in Kiwi Syslog Server

$

SolarWinds's own Justin Finley just recorded a video tutorial that shows how to split logs into multiple files by IP address and date in Kiwi Syslog Server.  Specifically, this syslog server tutorial shows how to store logs in separate folders for each source IP address, and then shows how to keep separate log files for each day within those folders.  (e.g., "D:\logs\192.168.000.001\Log2012-07-13.txt")

External link to Jing: autosplit - justinfinley's library

Video Guide:

  • 0:00 Opening Kiwi Syslog's configuration dialog
  • 0:15 Using an "AutoSplit" variable of "IP Address (4 octets)" (%IPAdd4) in the log path to split logs by IP address
  • 0:40 Using an "AutoSplit" variable of "ISO Date" (%DateISO) in the log path to split logs by date

Remember to "LIKE" this if you find it useful - that helps other find it too!

SYSLOG to SQL

Brand new KIWI 9.1 eval user... succeeded in getting my SYSLOG fed to a SQL table, but need to parse the msgtext field.   I'm not a script writer, but hope there is a way to do this without scripting???    I've attached an exerpt from what ends up in the SQL table.  The delimiter for the MSGText field is Binary 09 which I believe is a tab?    Also, a screen shot of how my rules are currently set up (and feeding but not parsing...)

The actual log entry would look like this with the underlined bold part being the msgtext to be parsed.......

Kiwi Syslog not capturing syslogs

Installed Kiwi Syslog Free version 9.3.4 on Windows Server 2008 R2.  Trying to capture syslog from a Cisco ASA 5510.  I have confirmed that the syslog events are hitting the server with Wireshark.  Nothing is coming through to Kiwi Syslog.  Current settings are all default.  No filters in place.  Not sure what is wrong as I can see the syslog messages coming through Wireshark. Any ideas as to why the syslog messages are not being seen by Kiwi?

Kiwi Syslog Service Keeps crashing

$

We have been experiencing an issue with our Kiwi Syslog Service crashing about every other day.  We are running version 9 and have a pretty standard setup where we are pushing syslogs from all of our devices in our network.  We have quite a bit of stuff logging to our Syslog server and are easily breaching the 200000 maximum message count throughout the day and getting email's.  We up'ed that and seem to be doing better however the syslog service continues to fail and will at times restart itself based off of the services recovery failure to restart the service but this is happening way to often.

Has anyone else seen this problem and if so, what kinds of things did you try/do?  Is this box just getting pegged so hard that it's causing the service to malfunction and trip up?  I'm not a Windows guy but is this issue even Windows related?  The only other application we have running on this server is CatTools and it runs clean with no service issues.  The systems team has taken a look at the server and believe this to be related only to the Kiwi application itself.

Next Steps: I'm thinking of removing and rebuilding the Kiwi 9 application from scratch to see if this corrects the issue but wanted some direction from the forum if anyone has any good ideas/suggestions.

Thankyou in advance!

syslog server crashing

$

we've recently built a new syslog server on a 2012 physical box.  it has other solarwinds tools.

the syslog service will start, run for a brief amount of time, then crash.  both kiwi and solarwinds syslog servers do this.  the error for kiwi is something to the effect of 'error 13 type mismatch' which is usually when an insert into a db is done with the wrong type of data (text into an integer field for example).

only certain devices seem to crash the server.  these are cisco nexus and 2921's.  other devices such as an ASA 5525, a PIX, WAP's etc, do not crash the service.  say for example i point router A to a test VM with kiwi on it.  the test vm kiwi service will stay up and not crash.  i then reconfigure router A to the new physical and it crashes almost immediately.

i've done packet captures and notice something very odd i cannot yet explain.  on the test vm the incoming packets have a different format than on the physical server.  specifically the date field is formatted different.

can anyone shed light on this?  very odd.  i'm wondering if it is a nic driver issue.  this is on an HP proliant dl360G7 but the windows drivers for the nic's only go up to 2008.  how on earth could the packets be arriving differently?  i dont think they can, i think something is changing them or formatting them oddly.

Kiwi Syslog Server does not display secure ASA syslogs

$

Hello to the community!

I have been confused with this for a while and i would like to get your help!

I have a network topology with an ASA 5520 and a Kiwi Syslog server 9.3.4-eval. I also have a CA server.

I have installed the root CA certificate on both the Kiwi Syslog Server and the ASA.

Also i have generated a certificate request for the Kiwi server which was signed by the CA server and also made a trustpoint on the ASA with that certificate (The signed one)

When i try to send syslogs it doesn't display anything.

I have installed Kiwi SyslogGen and have made some tests.

When i make a test with destination port 1468 (TCP default) it works and displays something on the Kiwi manager.

But when i make a test with destination port 6514 (Default Secure TCP) it fails.

On the command prompt i issued the following:

netstat -ano

there were the following entries regarding syslog:

TCP: 0.0.0.0 1468

UDP: 0.0.0.0:514

But nothing is listening to 6514

What can be the problem? Thank you very much in advance!!

Somethin i saw on the error log:

Unable to bind TCP listener to port 6514 There might be a problem with the certificate provided.

Here are some pictures of the settings:
