When is Kiwi Syslog v10 coming out?

$

0

As you all may recall, it's been 7 months since Kiwi Syslog v9.5 was posted (see Kiwi Syslog 9.5 is now Available! ).  I am very much looking forward to a major release (i.e. v10).  What would this new version contain?  I have a few things in my wish-list...

  • Increased the of number of syslog messages and snmp traps that can Kiwi can handle. According to a posting on Geek Speak (How many messages can Kiwi Syslog manage?), Kiwi can handle between 400 and 600 messages per second.  I'd like to see that go all the way up to 2,000 messages (or more).
  • Rules Wizard (for the novice and those of us with diminished brain-cells due to age.
  • Full web-based management option.  I don't know about other Thwackers, but I prefer not to use Win32 (via RDP) whenever possible.
  • Additional Polling Engine option for Kiwi.  This, so we can have multiple servers handle syslog messages and snmp traps.

I am sure that other Thwackers have many other items in their respective wish-list for Kiwi.  I'd like to hear from you.  And, of course, I'd like to hear from the Kiwi PM, to tell us what's in the Roadmap for the next Kiwi release.  Have a great day, everyone!!!

Kiwi Syslog Console Crashing Constantly After Upgrading 9.5.0 To 9.5.1

$

After upgrading to v9.5.1, from v9.5.0, we started experiencing constant crashing on our console. Other than a few minor quirks and annoyances, the previous version had not really crashed too often after we applied the hotfix.

Windows Server 2012

Virtual

4 CPUs(2 Cores per Socket, 2 Sockets)

24 GB RAM

150 GB Hard Disk

Kiwi Syslog Server, Installed as a Service

I began to notice the message buffer would quickly drop down from 100%, shortly after starting up the console. Sometimes we would only reach 43K MPH before crashing, while other times we made it up around 350K+ MPH before crashing. And, every time it would crash, the message buffer would be far away from 100%. Previously, the message buffer rarely, if ever, dropped under 100% free.

After reading through various other user issues of the past, I found something that mentioned the "MsgBufferSize" settings in the registry. I went looking into the registry for those settings, however, "MsgBufferSize" was nowhere to be found. I added the "MsgBufferSize" with the value of "10000000", which is shown to be the max value. After adding the settings into the registry, and restarting everything, our system appears to be running fairly smooth, so far. Currently, we are roughly around 430K MPH, with a full 100% buffer free.

Previously posted thread regarding the "MsgBufferSize" registry entry:

Does the Kiwi Syslog buffer with SQL Server

Registry values documentation:

Kiwi Syslog Server

Section: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SolarWinds\Syslogd\Properties

Value (STRING): MsgBufferSize

Registered mode:

Min value:        100

Max value:        10000000 (10 million)

Default value:        500000

Type:                Maximum number of message buffer entries

So, did something change from 9.5.0 to 9.5.1 that would have removed those settings from the registry? If not, then what else would have removed the entry altogether? Or, has the "MsgBufferSize" registry entry been removed all along, and the documentation just not updated? If it has been removed, and is not used anymore, then why would adding the entry back into the registry make everything suddenly start working again?

Thank you,

Kiwi Syslog "Check for update..." error

$

We are new to Kiwi Syslog and are just getting things configured.  We are on version 9.6.1.6.  One thing I immediately noticed is that running the "Check for update..." results in the following error: "An error occurred while checking for available software updates.  Check internet connectivity or proxy server settings.".

We have no proxy server enabled.  From the server with Kiwi Syslog, I have Internet connectivity via a browser with no problems.

From Kiwi's error log, I see the following line associated with the failed update: "Info: An error occurred while checking for available software updates.  Moved Temporarily [20152] - Resource: http://downloads.solarwinds.com/solarwinds/Release/Kiwi/Syslog/currentkiwisyslogversion.xml".  If I paste that URL into a browser, it returns the following:

<?xml version="1.0"?>

-<KiwiSyslogServerVersionManifest Version="1">

<CurrentVersion Version="9.6.1" Link="http://downloads.solarwinds.com/solarwinds/Release/Kiwi/Syslog/Kiwi-Syslog-Server-9.6.1.zip" DateReleased="2017-05-01"> New in 9.6.1 update ------------------------------ * Kiwi Syslog Server no longer creates large SolarWinds.SyslogServer.Engine.log fileswhich consume significant disk space. * Kiwi Syslog Server diagnostic information shows the correct buffer usage for all types of messages * If you do not see a "Download Update" button below, copy and paste the following link into your browser to download: http://downloads.solarwinds.com/solarwinds/Release/Kiwi/Syslog/Kiwi-Syslog-Server-9.6.1.zip</CurrentVersion>

</KiwiSyslogServerVersionManifest>

I can then paste the .zip link it references into a browser and get the zip file to download (although it appears to be the same version we already have).

Has anyone experienced the same issue or know how to fix it?

Thanks!

Kiwi Syslog not capturing syslogs

Installed Kiwi Syslog Free version 9.3.4 on Windows Server 2008 R2.  Trying to capture syslog from a Cisco ASA 5510.  I have confirmed that the syslog events are hitting the server with Wireshark.  Nothing is coming through to Kiwi Syslog.  Current settings are all default.  No filters in place.  Not sure what is wrong as I can see the syslog messages coming through Wireshark. Any ideas as to why the syslog messages are not being seen by Kiwi?

Hi

I testing Kiwi as snmp trap server that will forward some Traps to NPM.

I find it hard to forward SNMP trap and keep the source ip.

Is that syslog Only to "sppof" the source?

I have setup my KIWI syslog server to listen for SNMP traps, successfully.  Is there a way to setp KIWI, or an available action to forward the SNMP traps to other SNMP trap receivers as KIWI receives them.

Thanks

[Log to file Action Error] Merging 2 or more hostnames in one file

Hello folks.

My Kiwi Syslog is merging 2 or more hostnames (devices) in the same file when: "Log to file Action".

For example, i have 3 devices:

  1. 10.168.1.20
  2. 10.168.1.201
  3. 10.168.1.202

In the root folder of files, i had 3 folders, one for each hostname.

The 10.168.1.201 and 10.168.1.202 are logging correctly. But when i should have the 10.168.1.20 logs, i have a merge of 10.168.1.201 and 10.168.202 (without the 10.168.1.20).

I check another scenario (that i consider worse)...

I had a file log from 10.120.1.2. But this device don't exist.

IN this file, are logged 6 devices: 10.120.1.20, 10.120.1.25, 10.120.1.26, 10.120.1.27, 10.120.1.28 and 10.120.1.29.

The logs below, are in same file:

2015-02-10 00:10:19Local4.Warning10.120.1.2Feb 10 2015 02:10:19 HQ-BL1-HW9306-A1 %%01LLDP/4/BAD_PACKET(l)[2159934]:8 invalid packets were received after latest notification. The last invalid packet came from interface GigabitEthernet1/0/14.

Is a bug, or some misconfigured of my part?

Looking forward for a help,

Kiwi Syslog Server limitations

$

Hi everyone,

I wonder if Kiwi Syslog Server has any limitation on how many servers that it can collect the logs from or how many servers can send the logs to the syslog server?

I know the Web Access has 4GB db limitation.  What is the best practice for this limitation when you have more than 10 servers sending the logs to syslog server? I don't want to see only 1 or 2 day logs every day from Web Access.  I hope at least 4GB db limitation can store like a month logs of all 10+ servers.  I am trying first with the windows event logs (using the free tool Solwarwinds Event Log Forwarder)

Is there any limitation that i should be aware with Kiwi Syslog Server and Event Forwarder tool?

Another question:

Does Solarwinds Event Log Forwarder can work with other vendor syslog server? If so, which vendor and which syslog server product is that?

Thanks in advance!

How to Migrate Kiwi Syslog Server

$

There are 3 things that you need to consider when migrating Kiwi Syslog Server:

  1. Configuration - to back them up, simply open the Kiwi Syslog Server Manager and click "File -> Export Settings to INI" .
  2. Logs - Manually copy Syslog messages log files. Under Setup, look for all Log to file - action and take note of the path and file name.
  3. License - Deactivate the license from the old server using License Manager Tool first so that you can transfer the license to the new server. Please take note that Activation Key will be different once the license is deactivated. You can refer to the following video for more detail information:

Another copy of Kiwi Syslog Server Service manager is already running.

If you get this message:

You can check the system tray:

If Kiwi Syslog Server does not show up, you will want to go into Task Manager and End task on Syslogd_Manager.exe:

Kiwi Syslog Web Access Database Location

Hello,

We are looking to find the Windows file/folder location for where the Kiwi Syslog Web Access is pulling its records from?

We currently save events to the syslogd/logs location, as well as a SQL database.  But when we setup in the Kiwi Syslog Console Service Manager to send forwarded events to the 'Log to Kiwi Syslog Web Access', we cannot find where it stores those records?

Thanks,

Mark

Syslog Message Logging to MYSQL DB

I am new to kiwi syslog server. Configured kiwi syslog server with default fields to log messages to MYSQL DB and working fine.

But I wish to parse the message and log to MYSQL DB using custom fields. I dont have any knowledge about scripting.

Sample log is shown below. Each field is separated by a single space character. The message content is highlighted in red.

2012-09-01 10:37:14 Local6.Warning HQ-IPS-01 DefensePro: 01-04-2012 19:49:25 WARNING 300000 Intrusions "BO-WINXP" TCP ACCTS-C-PC1 1607 ACCTS-C-PC2 80 3 Regular "DMZ-Policy" occur 1 0 N/A 0 N/A low drop FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-0001-00004F7B1BE5

Only the following things needs to be extracted and logged to DB.

MsgDate:  2012-09-01

MsgTime:  10:37:14

MsgHostname: HQ-IPS-01

AttackId:   300000

AttackType: Intrusions

AttackDesc: BO-WINXP

AttackSrc: ACCTS-C-PC1

AttackDst: ACCTS-C-PC2

The number of such logs that needs parsing by the script will be more.

Request provide me guidance in configuring this.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks all...

PC's (W7) which are sending log messages through log forwarder are installed in czech language, server (2012R2) is in english. If I choose Font: Arial, Script: Central European, than when I open "Choose font" window again, it says in column Script: West - It doesn't change. If I choose font that has only Central European script for example Courier New, It doesn't work either - some letter have symbols instead of them. Messages in Kiwi Syslog are looking like this:

EDIT: Font is ok in txt files and in web access.

no log shows on Kiwi Syslog Web Access

I am having kiwi syslog 9.5 installed.

I choose to install as service and also installed the web access.

The syslog console opened fine and I see logs on displayed and also to file.

However, with the web access, it shows nothing (what so ever).  I checked the Setup on Console Manager and see that under Rules i have 2 exact same option for "Log to Syslog Web Access".  Everything under that options checked.

But I still see no log on web access.

1) I tried to uncheck all the "Log to Syslog Web Access".

2) Closed the Console Manager and reopened it

3) Checked mark one of the 2 optioins "Log to Syslog Web Access" and everything below it.

4) Opened and log in to web access -> Still see nothing.

any idea?

Hi Evertone,

i created a New device for the HP EI 5130 based on H3c switch using a script.

Also did the same with the .ini file.

All is created using the official manual from SW.

the problem I’m facing now is, after I’m copying both files into the corresponding folders

I do not see the new device in the drop list.

I have tried to close the program or even restart the service, bu nothing helped.

Thanks on advance.
