Kiwi Syslog Web Access - Edit User Account's Role

$

I feel like I am just a big stupid dummy here, and the obvious answer is hiding in plain sight, but...

I want to edit a user's account, changing their role from standard to admin.

Where/how is this accomplished?

Surely, I don't have to delete the account and recreate it, right?

Thank you,

SolarWinds.SyslogServer.Engine.log

Hi, I was hoping someone can explain the log files ('SolarWinds.SyslogServer.Engine.log') created in the Syslogd folder to me. What purpose do they serve? Are they safe to delete? Can I set them to be created in a different directory?

Thank you.

Windows Events 6005, 6006, 6008, 6009 and 1074 not logging in kiwi syslog server

Hello Everyone,

First time poster here. I am trying to track event log service status and power downs. I cannot get the windows machines to forward event logs  6005, 6006, 6008, 6009 and 1074.

I have event log forwarder configured correctly, at least the log preview shows the correct logs being forwarded. I do have a custom filter built just for these event IDs but I also have a catch all file that is not filtered. I am checking in both the web access and the syslog server itself. Neither of them receive these event logs from the windows machines. I haven't noticed any other events not being forwarded. All of my other filters are producing the information correctly.

Any tips on how to collect these logs?

TIPS HOW TO - Kiwi Syslog Web Server with SSL and IIS 7

$

HI all,

My first post, i wish to share you some tips i found.

My main goal was to have access to the kiwi web site working with SSL...

But looking at Cassinni Web Server, it wasn't possible.

After searching more on this forum I found a post about a Rewriting Module with Apache ; so why dont we do it with IIS ?

Here we go !

Setup

- Win 2008 R2 , IIS 7 (with auth modules etc ...) , at least a working SSL certificate for the HTTPS listener (this post will not cover how PKI works, certs installation etc .... sorry).

- We will use the ARR 2.0 module x64 for IIS... See References at bottom for DL link, install it.

- A running Kiwi Syslog Server and the Web Access working on port 8088. Access via a browser works on this port.

Goal

- Enable the rewrite/proxy module in IIS

- Create a new IIS Web Site with HTTPS Listener on TCP Port 8090

- Create a rule to rewrite requests from 8090 to 8088

- When connecting on https://server:8090 , we would see Kiwi Web page.

HOW TO

1. Enabling the rewrite module

"C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe" set config  -section:system.webServer/proxy /enabled:"True"  /commit:apphost

2. New Site creation

set syslogwebdir=c:\inetpub\syslog

set syslogsitename=SYSLOG

"C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe" add site /name:"%syslogsitename%" /id:15 /bindings:https/*:8090: /physicalPath:"%syslogwebdir%"

3. Attach the SSL Certificate to the Binding 8090

3.1 With batch/cmd line(copy/past to a BAT file)

set CERTHASH=EnterYourHashHere

netsh http add sslcert ipport=0.0.0.0:8090 certhash=%CERTHASH% appid={00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

3.2 With IIS Manager (if you don't know where to read Hash Certificate).

-Right Click on SYSLOG site, modify Bindings.

-Select https 8090 * Listener > Modify.

-On the "box" SSL Certificate, choose your certificate for the server.

-"OK"

4. Create the rule (copy/past to a BAT file)

set syslogsitename=SYSLOG

set syslogrulename="Rewrite to Kiwi localhost 8088"

:: Rewrite Rule creation
"C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe" set config "%syslogsitename%" -section:system.webServer/rewrite/rules /+[name='%syslogrulename%']

:: Rule Parameters (one line)
"C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe" set config "%syslogsitename%" -section:system.webServer/rewrite/rules /[name='%syslogrulename%'].action.type:"Rewrite" /[name='%syslogrulename%'].match.url:"(.*)" /[name='%syslogrulename%'].action.url:"http://localhost:8088/{R:1}"

5. End

Test with your browser https://localhost:8090/

Now you can access from an "admin desktop" to this new SSL web site ...

Configure your firewalls to forbid access on port 8088 to this server (or/and configure the internal Windows Firewall of this server to allow only Localhost connection on 8088).

---

At the beginning i was thinking to use http://mysite/syslog/ as a virtual directory, but I got some troubles with events.aspx and the rewrite module.

Inbound Rules was OK ; But Outbound Rules to rewrite URLS were not working as expected ; and filters in Kiwi were not working anymore.

That's why i decided to create a new site on another binding, with a root site ; so don't need to create Outbound Rules ...

Kiwi Syslog Server Web Interface Very Slow

$

I just setup an evaluation installation of the Kiwi Syslog Server and it's Web Access component.  I have one relatively high volume system logging to it.

When I search for specific logs using filters in the Web Access, it takes a very long time fetching the events.  If this is the case with only one system logging to it I am concerned about performance if I have a bunch more systems log to it.

Is this typical behavior for Kiwi Web Access?

Problem with filtering in Kiwi Syslog

$

I am setting up a kiwi syslog server.  Running into a problem with the filtering not working the way I would expect.  I have used Kiwi but that was several years ago.  I have setup a display for a specific switch and have tried several different filter possibilities but still getting syslog messages on the display that dont belong to the switch I am trying to watch.

I have tried a ip address - simple filter with the ip address of the switch "10.1.1.2".  On the cisco switch, I have used the command logging source-interface vlan 254 which should send out the syslog messages using the ip address in the simple filter I setup.  I have also tried the hostname option with the hostname of the switch "Switch1" but same problem.

It has got to be something simple but so far I havent found the problem.  Since this is the free version, I know I cant call Solar Winds support.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Klog? - Sending syslogs from scripts, batch files, etc

We are looking into sending messages to Kiwi Syslog from a few login scripts.  I have seen some references to a command line utility named klog.exe as well as some DLLs (and other VB libraries).  However, I cannot find a way to download them or find them on the Kiwi Syslog server.  Are these tools still available?  If so, where?  If not, why?

thank you.

Has anyone configured Active Directory Settings in Kiwi Syslog Server 9.4.1?  Below are the available Active Directory Settings available in the Web Access interface under the Admin Tab.

  • Domain URL: <Free Form Box>  My domain prepopulated correctly.
  • Authentication Type: <Free Form Box>.  Is this supposed to be NTLM, Kerberos, etc?
  • User Groups: <Free Form Box>  Does the format need to be LDAP based?

Kiwi Syslog Server: Rule Action: Log to NT Event Log

$
0
0

Is there no way to create a custom Event log and log items to it? Can you not change the event IDs of any of your rules? Can you at least parse any of the syslog message to the event in order to change the hostname its coming from or source? can you not modify the message as it is logged maybe to strip out the date and time (In order to set consolidation of alerting in other programs you are catching these alerts)? All I am able to do is change the message type (Event Level).

This is a HUGE win for us if ANY of these ideas can be added.

Currently we are sending SAN array alerts through syslog and catching it through Kiwi. Kiwi is logging to the event log and SCOM is picking it up and notifying the correct party. However, there is not much we can do at the moment in Kiwi to have the event logged in a way to use several different actions in SCOM since your choices are only Warning, Error, or informational.

Please let me know if you are having any of these same problems or if you know another way around this. There are free syslog servers that aren't nearly as good as syslog for filtering and rules, but you have the options to send alerts to several different custom Event logs.

Kiwi Syslog Web Access stuck on one date

Hi

I recently moved Kiwi Syslog Server (v9.6.1) to another server box

Since then I can tell that data is coming in because of the presence of files (size and date) in \Syslogd\Logs

On average each daily log file reaches around 15GB

Opened a few of these using Glogg and the data seems intelligible

The Web Access console however won't show me anything else but the 25th of July

No filters are active and the only restriction on event storage is the 365 day limit

Any ideas ?

sys log server errors "FormatMessage failed with 1815" help please!!

Good day Community,

I am experiencing an urgent issue. The sys log server forwarder is forwarding the following message to the KIWI sys log server. The actual security logs are showing the correct information, however the message below is being showed. I thought it was the server, but wen I added another sever to forward security logs, I am getting the same message as shown below.

Can anyone who have encountered this message or know how to resolve this issue. The security logs are on the server and I can view them using event viewer properly and audit logs are reflecting fine.

I would really appreciate your humble assistance or comments.

Kiwi Syslog Service Keeps crashing

$

We have been experiencing an issue with our Kiwi Syslog Service crashing about every other day.  We are running version 9 and have a pretty standard setup where we are pushing syslogs from all of our devices in our network.  We have quite a bit of stuff logging to our Syslog server and are easily breaching the 200000 maximum message count throughout the day and getting email's.  We up'ed that and seem to be doing better however the syslog service continues to fail and will at times restart itself based off of the services recovery failure to restart the service but this is happening way to often.

Has anyone else seen this problem and if so, what kinds of things did you try/do?  Is this box just getting pegged so hard that it's causing the service to malfunction and trip up?  I'm not a Windows guy but is this issue even Windows related?  The only other application we have running on this server is CatTools and it runs clean with no service issues.  The systems team has taken a look at the server and believe this to be related only to the Kiwi application itself.

Next Steps: I'm thinking of removing and rebuilding the Kiwi 9 application from scratch to see if this corrects the issue but wanted some direction from the forum if anyone has any good ideas/suggestions.

Thankyou in advance!

Klog input file

Having an issue with the klog.exe -i parameter.

The input file contains data across numerous line breaks (example below), however, when logged into Kiwi Syslog Service Manager (9.5) they are displayed as several separate log entries.

Date/Time

Source

User

Message

The data source is from Windows Event Viewer as the Event Log Forwarder doesn't actually forward events in real time for me, so this is a workaround.

What I'd like is for KSSM to treat the above input as 1 message rather than 4 separate messages.

Is this possible? I haven't configured any of the additional settings in KSSM so if this is down to a setting in there I can easily adjust.

Newbie to Kiwi Syslog! Took responsibility after previous co-worker...

During my initial discovery, the Syslog server is configured, "Kiwi Syslog server v9", Engineer's Toolset V11.0 Desktop - ETS1", and "Network Performance Monitor - SL100".

I've located Syslog log files location, set up for 30 days.

Should I be looking at any dashboard? Log file viewer?

Looking for suggestions on crush course to learn the system.  Tech support only helps if I have technical problem.

How did you start?  Learn?  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
