Kiwi Syslog Server registry entry is insecure

$
0
0

I've installed Syslog Server and then performed a security scan on the server. It came back flagged with a registry entry:

System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Kiwi Syslog Server\Sendata.

The group policy for :
"Network Access: Remotely accessible registry paths and sub-paths" has the above entered in it. It is a Category I finding on the STIG.

Is this a requirement of Syslog, if not, what is it used for. Can it be deleted and still function?

Thanks!

How to Split Logs to Multiple Displays in Kiwi Syslog Server

$

SolarWinds's own Justin Finley just recorded a video tutorial that shows how to split logs into multiple displays in Kiwi Syslog Server.

External link to Jing: Multiple Displays - justinfinley's library

Video Guide:

  • 0:00 Unfiltered display (Display 00)
  • 0:10 Showing the rule that sends all messages to Display 00
  • 0:20 Changing the unfiltered display from Display 00 to Display 05
  • 0:25 Checking that the switch happened
  • 0:35 Adding a new filter rule looking for the word "logon" and sending it to Display 01
  • 1:20 Adding a new filter rule looking for the word "logoff" and sending it to Display 02
  • 2:05 Checking that the new filters work
  • 2:25 Renaming "Display 05" to "All Messages"
  • 2:45 Renaming "Display 01" to "Logon" and "Display 02" to "Logoff"
  • 3:10 Checking that the display renaming worked

Event Log Forwarder - Where is the Audit Failure Type?

$

Hi There,

I'm trialing Kiwi Syslog and I'm having trouble with the Log Forwarder and Security Event Log.  When I click on the Security Log I don't see Audit Success or Audit Failure as an event type.  It just has Error, Warning and Information.  If I manually edit the CFG file and add <int>16</int> it works, but then it gets overwritten if I make a change.  Am I doing something wrong?  How can I see Audit Failure as an Event Type?

Thanks,

SolarWinds LogForwarder 1.2 NOT WORKING

I have installed the kiwi syslog server 9.5 and I am using the SolarWinds LogForwarder 1.2 on all the other servers and endpoints to send the logs to the kiwi syslog server.

I noticed that I am not receiving any logs from the servers only network devices (switches, routers, etc.) I checked to see if the Log Forwarder for Windows is running, and I noticed that it was not. I manually started the service, and then sometime after that the service stopped. I checked the event viewer application log and saw the following each in a separate entry

  1. Service started successfully.
  2. Server Initialization Failed.  See previous event messages for reason.
  3. SolarWinds Event Log Forwarder for Windows; Service Stopped.

I have the SolarWinds LogForwarder 1.2 installed on w2k8r2 and w2k12r2 servers.  I opened the log forwarder service log and I saw this

Display original source of message when logs are aggregated through rsyslog server

$

I am hoping you can give me a hand with an issue that I am having. I have a number of servers in a DMZ that are logging to a central rsyslog server and then forwarding these messages to a KiwiSyslog server. Unfortunately when this happens all of the messages received by Kiwi are labelled with the hostname/ip of the rsyslog server and not their original source. I am unable to enable UDP Spoofing on the RSyslog server as the firewall will only allow traffic from this servers IP and not the spoofed addresses.

Take the following example:
InternalServer1 -> KiwiSyslogServer
-Kiwi is able to resolve the name of InternalServer1 and everything works fine.

DMZServer1 -> DMZRSyslogServer -> KiwiSyslogServer
-Kiwi is not able to resolve the name of DMZServer1 as the incoming messages are stamped with the IPAddress of the DMZRSyslogServer

I noticed in the help documents that there is the option to modify a message by processing it with a script. The example they give for "Fields.VarPeerAddress" is very similar to what we want to happen:

"Firewall device (192.168.1.1) ---> First syslog collector (192.168.1.2) ---> This syslog collector (192.168.1.3)
The Fields.VarPeerAddres value would be 192.168.1.1."

So would a script similar to the following work? Anyone have any experience with this?

"Function Main()
  ' Replace DMZServerIP with ActualSourceIP within the message hostname
Fields. = Replace(Fields., "123.123.123.123", Fields.VarPeerAddress)
  ' Return OK to tell syslog that the script ran correctly.
Main = "OK"
  End Function"

I currently have a Kiwi Syslog (9.3.4) on a Windows Server 2003 R2 (x64) and would like to know the following;

1. Can I install the current version (9.3.4) into a newly build Windows Server 2012 R2 machine? Is it compatible with Server 2012 R2?  If yes, can I move the database of the old Kiwi to the newly installed Kiwi Syslog server? If no;

2. Can I install the new version (9.5) into a newly build Windows Server 2012 R2 without buying a new license?

Thanks guys.

Kiwi Syslog "Check for update..." error

$

We are new to Kiwi Syslog and are just getting things configured.  We are on version 9.6.1.6.  One thing I immediately noticed is that running the "Check for update..." results in the following error: "An error occurred while checking for available software updates.  Check internet connectivity or proxy server settings.".

We have no proxy server enabled.  From the server with Kiwi Syslog, I have Internet connectivity via a browser with no problems.

From Kiwi's error log, I see the following line associated with the failed update: "Info: An error occurred while checking for available software updates.  Moved Temporarily [20152] - Resource: http://downloads.solarwinds.com/solarwinds/Release/Kiwi/Syslog/currentkiwisyslogversion.xml".  If I paste that URL into a browser, it returns the following:

<?xml version="1.0"?>

-<KiwiSyslogServerVersionManifest Version="1">

<CurrentVersion Version="9.6.1" Link="http://downloads.solarwinds.com/solarwinds/Release/Kiwi/Syslog/Kiwi-Syslog-Server-9.6.1.zip" DateReleased="2017-05-01"> New in 9.6.1 update ------------------------------ * Kiwi Syslog Server no longer creates large SolarWinds.SyslogServer.Engine.log fileswhich consume significant disk space. * Kiwi Syslog Server diagnostic information shows the correct buffer usage for all types of messages * If you do not see a "Download Update" button below, copy and paste the following link into your browser to download: http://downloads.solarwinds.com/solarwinds/Release/Kiwi/Syslog/Kiwi-Syslog-Server-9.6.1.zip</CurrentVersion>

</KiwiSyslogServerVersionManifest>

I can then paste the .zip link it references into a browser and get the zip file to download (although it appears to be the same version we already have).

Has anyone experienced the same issue or know how to fix it?

Thanks!

Syslog server not receiving messages in TCP/SSL mode

$

Hello,

I have installed kiwi syslog server 9.6.3.3 eval version and trying to configure syslog in TCP SSL mode.

First, these are the steps I following to configure the server:

     a) created a self signed certificate using java keytool.

     b) imported into windows certificates personal and trusted roots folder.

     c) selected the imported certificate in kiwi setup configuration.

After following the above steps , I got below error in Event log file.

2017-11-29 16:40:06 Unable to bind secure TCP listener to port 6514 There might be a problem with the certificate provided.

After googling for this error, I got below link and used IIS server to create a self-signed certificate

Re: Kiwi Syslog Server does not display secure ASA syslogs

After configuring certificate  which is generated from IIS, I started getting below error.

2017-11-30 12:37:30 Source: C:\Windows\SysWow64\mswinsck.ocx Error: Socket is non-blocking and the specified operation will block

But , I was able to receive messages in SSL mode using java code running in same box where syslog server is installed. If I try to run same java code from any  box other than kiwi server, it is not receiving messages.

Observed similar behavior for TCP mode as well.

How to check syslog server is configured correctly or not? Is there any way to do that?.

Thanks in Advance!!

TCP Syslog Does Not Work in Latest Version

$

I use kiwi syslog server a lot for testing syslog.  It seems like in the latest version there are issues with TCP.  I'm verifying with the Kiwi Syslog Message Generator.  Seems like with syslog server version 9.4.1 TCP connects and works, but in latest version 9.6.3 it does not connect for some reason. When I try to connect TCP with message generator it says "TCP session remotely disconnected" using the same tool the same exact way, it works with version 9.4.1. I'm using the syslog message generator tool on the same machine as the syslog server.  Is this a known issue, or am I missing something?  Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.  Thank you very much.

Kiwi Syslog Console Crashing Constantly After Upgrading 9.5.0 To 9.5.1

$

After upgrading to v9.5.1, from v9.5.0, we started experiencing constant crashing on our console. Other than a few minor quirks and annoyances, the previous version had not really crashed too often after we applied the hotfix.

Windows Server 2012

Virtual

4 CPUs(2 Cores per Socket, 2 Sockets)

24 GB RAM

150 GB Hard Disk

Kiwi Syslog Server, Installed as a Service

I began to notice the message buffer would quickly drop down from 100%, shortly after starting up the console. Sometimes we would only reach 43K MPH before crashing, while other times we made it up around 350K+ MPH before crashing. And, every time it would crash, the message buffer would be far away from 100%. Previously, the message buffer rarely, if ever, dropped under 100% free.

After reading through various other user issues of the past, I found something that mentioned the "MsgBufferSize" settings in the registry. I went looking into the registry for those settings, however, "MsgBufferSize" was nowhere to be found. I added the "MsgBufferSize" with the value of "10000000", which is shown to be the max value. After adding the settings into the registry, and restarting everything, our system appears to be running fairly smooth, so far. Currently, we are roughly around 430K MPH, with a full 100% buffer free.

Previously posted thread regarding the "MsgBufferSize" registry entry:

Does the Kiwi Syslog buffer with SQL Server

Registry values documentation:

Kiwi Syslog Server

Section: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SolarWinds\Syslogd\Properties

Value (STRING): MsgBufferSize

Registered mode:

Min value:        100

Max value:        10000000 (10 million)

Default value:        500000

Type:                Maximum number of message buffer entries

So, did something change from 9.5.0 to 9.5.1 that would have removed those settings from the registry? If not, then what else would have removed the entry altogether? Or, has the "MsgBufferSize" registry entry been removed all along, and the documentation just not updated? If it has been removed, and is not used anymore, then why would adding the entry back into the registry make everything suddenly start working again?

Thank you,

-Will

Kiwi Syslog Service hanging

1st time starting a discussion.

1st time working with Kiwi Syslog.

Let me know if I'm in the wrong place.

I am very new to Syslog Servers.

I'm a Route/Switch type guy.

We are using Kiwi Syslog to get Call Manager Call Traces for troubleshooting.

This Instance of Kiwi Syslog was working fine as a Guest VMware Server on a Host Server.

We used the app Veeam to move the Kiwi Syslog VMware Guest Server to another Host.

This issue started after the copy/move of the Kiwi Syslog

No IP addresses were changed, it's on the same network as before.

It starts up, logs are being received, and then they stop.

If you try to start the service, it tells you it's already running.

At the bottom of the Kiwi Syslog Service Manager, you can see the MPH indicator has stopped.

Looking at the correct folder I can see the logs are no longer being  received.

If I stop the service and start the service it starts.

There is a script that tells it to restart every morning at 4am, and it will do this.

Below is the error event seen when it stopped last time.

Windows Server 2012 R2

64 -bit OS

Has anyone seen this type of issue before?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Mhaley

Kiwi collecting from Samsung OfficeServ 7070

$

Hi

Has anyone managed to get CDR data from an OfficeServ 7070 to a Kiwi Syslog server? It seems as if for this PABX the application must actively fetch the data rather than listen for it on UDP or TCP/IP, I do not have all the PABX info but from everything I've managed to find on the net this seems to be the case.

We need to either get this PABX to push through the records to the Kiwi Server or if possible to make the Kiwi Server an active client that will get the data from the PABX, not too sure if either are possible?

Thank You
