How many messages per hour can the syslog server reliably handle per hour or per second before dropping / skipping / missing messages and failing to trigger alerts?

How to Split Log Files by IP Address and Date in Kiwi Syslog Server

SolarWinds's own Justin Finley just recorded a video tutorial that shows how to split logs into multiple files by IP address and date in Kiwi Syslog Server.  Specifically, this syslog server tutorial shows how to store logs in separate folders for each source IP address, and then shows how to keep separate log files for each day within those folders.  (e.g., "D:\logs\192.168.000.001\Log2012-07-13.txt")

External link to Jing: autosplit - justinfinley's library

Video Guide:

  • 0:00 Opening Kiwi Syslog's configuration dialog
  • 0:15 Using an "AutoSplit" variable of "IP Address (4 octets)" (%IPAdd4) in the log path to split logs by IP address
  • 0:40 Using an "AutoSplit" variable of "ISO Date" (%DateISO) in the log path to split logs by date

Log Forwarder multiple lines

We were previously using Snare for syslog forwarding to our Kiwi server, but it would periodically send old syslogs from windows eventvwr on random servers.  We migrated to Log Forwarder and it has been much better.  Our only issue now is that we previously ran reports on our syslog logfiles and since Snare would dump all information to one line, parsing and finding the information we needed was easy.   Log Forwarder logs to multiple lines which is a problem when we want to gather logged information.  Does anyone know how to not make our syslogs look like this? ...

Kiwi Syslog not receiving any message

Hello,

I just installed Syslog on a Windows 8 VM (ESXi 5.5).

However... I don't received any message from the router (Cisco RV042G) I want to log.

I tried the generic troubleshhoting :

• Check network connectivity by pinging from the sending device to the Syslog Server machine  => OK
• Check only one instance of Kiwi Syslog Server is running (Ctrl-Shift-Esc to get the task-list) => OK, only one
• Disable any personal firewall software such as ZoneAlarm or BlackIce => Disabled

• Use a sniffer to check if messages from the routing are reaching the PC => Yes, I can see them
• Check DNS resolution is working as expected by pinging a hostname from the Command Prompt => OK
• Check that there is a "Display" action setup for the facility and level you are expecting to receive messages on. => OK
• Send a test message to yourself by pressing Ctrl+T => Displayed
• Download a copy of the Free Syslog Server Message Generator (SyslogGen) from: www.kiwisyslog.com/downloads => Done
• Install SyslogGen and set it to send a message every second to the address 127.0.0.1 (local host). => Not displayed, and I don't see them in a local packet capture.
• Try sending messages with SyslogGen from another machine to the host running the Syslog Server => Not displayed, but see them on a packet capture (on Syslog PC)

Do you have any idea about the cause of this issue ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Kiwi Syslog Service hanging

1st time starting a discussion.

1st time working with Kiwi Syslog.

Let me know if I'm in the wrong place.

I am very new to Syslog Servers.

I'm a Route/Switch type guy.

We are using Kiwi Syslog to get Call Manager Call Traces for troubleshooting.

This Instance of Kiwi Syslog was working fine as a Guest VMware Server on a Host Server.

We used the app Veeam to move the Kiwi Syslog VMware Guest Server to another Host.

This issue started after the copy/move of the Kiwi Syslog

No IP addresses were changed, it's on the same network as before.

It starts up, logs are being received, and then they stop.

If you try to start the service, it tells you it's already running.

At the bottom of the Kiwi Syslog Service Manager, you can see the MPH indicator has stopped.

Looking at the correct folder I can see the logs are no longer being  received.

If I stop the service and start the service it starts.

There is a script that tells it to restart every morning at 4am, and it will do this.

Below is the error event seen when it stopped last time.

Windows Server 2012 R2

64 -bit OS

Has anyone seen this type of issue before?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

TCP Syslog Does Not Work in Latest Version

$

I use kiwi syslog server a lot for testing syslog.  It seems like in the latest version there are issues with TCP.  I'm verifying with the Kiwi Syslog Message Generator.  Seems like with syslog server version 9.4.1 TCP connects and works, but in latest version 9.6.3 it does not connect for some reason. When I try to connect TCP with message generator it says "TCP session remotely disconnected" using the same tool the same exact way, it works with version 9.4.1. I'm using the syslog message generator tool on the same machine as the syslog server.  Is this a known issue, or am I missing something?  Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.  Thank you very much.

Administrator Password Missed; Other way to login

Hi,

I have recently been handed over Kiwi Syslog server to manage which has both Fat Client and Web Server. Fat Client is directly logged in however Web console could not be logged in. When I checked regarding the password of "Administrator", I have been informed that resource handling it has left long ago and there is no one to tell.

Is there a way we can reset the password of Administrator or create a new user from Syslog Fat Client. I cant raise the request with Support as we do not have active maintanence.

Thanks,

Syed

Windows Events 6005, 6006, 6008, 6009 and 1074 not logging in kiwi syslog server

Hello Everyone,

First time poster here. I am trying to track event log service status and power downs. I cannot get the windows machines to forward event logs  6005, 6006, 6008, 6009 and 1074.

I have event log forwarder configured correctly, at least the log preview shows the correct logs being forwarded. I do have a custom filter built just for these event IDs but I also have a catch all file that is not filtered. I am checking in both the web access and the syslog server itself. Neither of them receive these event logs from the windows machines. I haven't noticed any other events not being forwarded. All of my other filters are producing the information correctly.

Any tips on how to collect these logs?

Parsing logs from Windows Event logs

Good day,

How can we get windows event logs to be stored in the database with there specific fields

  1. Event ID
  2. DATE and TIME
  3. EVENT DESCRIPTION
  4. AUDIT TYPE
  5. SERVER NAME
  6. ACCOUNT NAME
  7. DOMAIN NAME
  8. FAILURE CODE
  9. FAILURE REASON
  10. LOGON TYPE

Currently the information is stored in one (1) field. Is there a parse script or way to split the information as seen above and store in the database.

My project team is urgently awaiting a response to complete an overdue task. Can someone kindly provide some assistance, guidance or information.

Thanks in advance.

How to search all log files

$

Hi everyone,

Can someone confirm that both the Kiwi Syslog Service Manager console and the Kiwi Syslog Web Access will only display messages for current log files.  Therefore, a find or filter will only bring up hits for the most current log files, correct?

Assuming that is the case, I found a thread that mentions WinGREP as a freeware to search all log files on your hard drive.  Wouldn't it be helpful for this capability to be integrated into Kiwi Syslog Server?

For example, I am importing all Windows Security events from all domain controllers into Kiwi Syslog Server.  I want to be able to search for a username and the phrase "user account is locked out" for as far back as I have logs.  How do I do this easily?

Thanks,

Tony

Good day Community,

I am experiencing an urgent issue. The sys log server forwarder is forwarding the following message to the KIWI sys log server. The actual security logs are showing the correct information, however the message below is being showed. I thought it was the server, but wen I added another sever to forward security logs, I am getting the same message as shown below.

Can anyone who have encountered this message or know how to resolve this issue. The security logs are on the server and I can view them using event viewer properly and audit logs are reflecting fine.

I would really appreciate your humble assistance or comments.
