Syslog server support for TLS v1.2, Mutual authentication and IPv6 address

$

Hi folks,

I have not gone through any previous threads. Pardon me if this is a repeated query or clarification requested. Have started looking at trial version initially to make sure if this supports my requirements.

Have couple of queries, request to clarify these with request to secure tcp syslog server.

a. Currently seeing that although requested TLS version is set to v1.2 in client hello, Server negotiates back to v1.0. Is there a way to continue with TLSv1.2 protocol.

b. Also have CA signed certificates imported on both to Syslog server running on windows and also on corresponding router acting as a client. But Server doesnt request for Client certificate (as its optional) and unable to verify mutual authentication. Only server certificate is validated by the Client and connection is made. How to enforce mutual authentication where router to validates the client certificate.

c. Is there any IPv6 address support for Syslog server, or its only available in licensed version.

Thanks in advance.

Can't start Kiwi Syslog Service - Logon Failure

$

After installing the permanent license for Kiwi Syslog server the Syslog service will not start.  It started without problems when running as the trial version.  No errors appear in the Kiwi Syslog error log, but the Windows event viewer shows the following error:

The Kiwi Syslog Server service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not start due to a logon failure.

I can't find anything in the Kiwi Syslog documentation about having to login.  The OS is Windows 2008 R2.  I am starting the Syslog service from Service Manager > Manage, and Service Manager was Run As Administrator.

Is this a known problem?

Thanks, Glenn

I get this message frequently and have to restart the syslog service to make it go away.  Further, most of the time the service refuses to die and I have to resort to taskkill /f  to kill it so that I can bring it back again.

Any help?

Thanks!

Has anyone configured Active Directory Settings in Kiwi Syslog Server 9.4.1?  Below are the available Active Directory Settings available in the Web Access interface under the Admin Tab.

  • Domain URL: <Free Form Box>  My domain prepopulated correctly.
  • Authentication Type: <Free Form Box>.  Is this supposed to be NTLM, Kerberos, etc?

"like" filter in kiwi web access not working

$

Hello guys...

I'm just evaluating Kiwi Syslog Server for collecting windows event logs (fed by snare agents).

Everything is working like a charm except creating own filters in web access.

I want to create a filter to show every event containing a special string (Logon Type: 3) in "Message Text".

filter field:              message text
predicate:              is
field operator:       like
filter expression:   Logon Type: 3

does not work: no filtering is done.

filter expression:   Logon Type:
and
filter expression:   Logon Type

work, just entries containing "Logon Type" are displayed.

Is there any possibility to filter for "Logon Type: 3"?

Thanks in advance, Jens

Limiting Size of Log file

Hi,

We are using the Kiwi Syslog Web Access as a syslog for all the network and security devices. Due to this we are unable to fetch events for any specific filters applied on the Kiwi Syslog Web Access.

We alternatively go to the location: \Program Files (x86)\Syslogd\Logs and try to open the logs in text editor like notepad++.

The problem is:

1. That file size is too large (~700 MB) and we are unable to open via the text editor. Is there any way to limit the size.

2. On the Web Access, when a filter is applied, the software crashes with the error:

Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown.

Kiwi SysLog Web Access Not Working after Upgradeing WhatsUpGold

Both applications have been running on the same server for several years. This is a Windows 2008 R2 64 bit machine, running the Army AGM.

WuG is now working 16.x

One of the things IPSwitch had me try to do, to fix WuG was install SQL Server Express 2008 R2

Kiwi Syslog (KSL) is version 9.3.4, the Kiwi Syslog Server Console "Is" working, only Web Access is down.

I tried to reinstall KSL, it worked, but somehow then WuG web access went down, I had to repair IIS and .NET

WuG uses 443, trying to get KSL to use 8088 (previously used) or 8888

When I try to access (even just Browse Web Site from IIS) I get:

"Error An unknown error occurred requesting resource /

When I click the link:

"Error An unknown error occurred requesting resource

/Gateway.aspx

At this point it just loops.

In IIS, I deleted the original website and created a new one.  Path I used is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Kiwi Syslog Web Access\html

no log shows on Kiwi Syslog Web Access

I am having kiwi syslog 9.5 installed.

I choose to install as service and also installed the web access.

The syslog console opened fine and I see logs on displayed and also to file.

However, with the web access, it shows nothing (what so ever).  I checked the Setup on Console Manager and see that under Rules i have 2 exact same option for "Log to Syslog Web Access".  Everything under that options checked.

But I still see no log on web access.

1) I tried to uncheck all the "Log to Syslog Web Access".

2) Closed the Console Manager and reopened it

3) Checked mark one of the 2 optioins "Log to Syslog Web Access" and everything below it.

4) Opened and log in to web access -> Still see nothing.

any idea?

Administrator Password Missed; Other way to login

Hi,

I have recently been handed over Kiwi Syslog server to manage which has both Fat Client and Web Server. Fat Client is directly logged in however Web console could not be logged in. When I checked regarding the password of "Administrator", I have been informed that resource handling it has left long ago and there is no one to tell.

Is there a way we can reset the password of Administrator or create a new user from Syslog Fat Client. I cant raise the request with Support as we do not have active maintanence.

Thanks,

Syed

Kiwi Syslog not receiving any message

Hello,

I just installed Syslog on a Windows 8 VM (ESXi 5.5).

However... I don't received any message from the router (Cisco RV042G) I want to log.

I tried the generic troubleshhoting :

• Check network connectivity by pinging from the sending device to the Syslog Server machine  => OK
• Check only one instance of Kiwi Syslog Server is running (Ctrl-Shift-Esc to get the task-list) => OK, only one
• Disable any personal firewall software such as ZoneAlarm or BlackIce => Disabled

• Use a sniffer to check if messages from the routing are reaching the PC => Yes, I can see them
• Check DNS resolution is working as expected by pinging a hostname from the Command Prompt => OK
• Check that there is a "Display" action setup for the facility and level you are expecting to receive messages on. => OK
• Send a test message to yourself by pressing Ctrl+T => Displayed
• Download a copy of the Free Syslog Server Message Generator (SyslogGen) from: www.kiwisyslog.com/downloads => Done
• Install SyslogGen and set it to send a message every second to the address 127.0.0.1 (local host). => Not displayed, and I don't see them in a local packet capture.
• Try sending messages with SyslogGen from another machine to the host running the Syslog Server => Not displayed, but see them on a packet capture (on Syslog PC)

Do you have any idea about the cause of this issue ?

Thanks in advance for your help.
