How to Split Log Files by IP Address and Date in Kiwi Syslog Server

SolarWinds's own Justin Finley just recorded a video tutorial that shows how to split logs into multiple files by IP address and date in Kiwi Syslog Server.  Specifically, this syslog server tutorial shows how to store logs in separate folders for each source IP address, and then shows how to keep separate log files for each day within those folders.  (e.g., "D:\logs\192.168.000.001\Log2012-07-13.txt")

Video Guide:

  • 0:00 Opening Kiwi Syslog's configuration dialog
  • 0:15 Using an "AutoSplit" variable of "IP Address (4 octets)" (%IPAdd4) in the log path to split logs by IP address
  • 0:40 Using an "AutoSplit" variable of "ISO Date" (%DateISO) in the log path to split logs by date

Changing the userid for Syslog Web Access

During installation of Syslog Web Access, you are prompted for a userid and password.  The password can be changed at any time easily.

But how does one change the userid?  Where is it stored?

We even went as far as trying to reinstall syslog web access to get to the initial userid prompt again.  But having already asked us once, it did not ask us again.

Thanks,

Filtering out certain messages in Kiwi Syslog...

$

Hello,

I am in a situation where I need to filter out a certain string. It is a little complicated however. The string(s) I am trying to filter out usually looks like this:

"port D10-High collision or drop rate."

D10 is a device bay in a chassis and that is what we are really interested in here. There are 16 device bays so it can be D1, D2, D3....D16.

The only problem is that there is no space between D10 and "-High"

And we WOULD like to keep getting messaged that dont have the Dx part in it so we cant just filter out "collision or drop rate."

Is the only way to do this by putting 16 separate filters like so: ...?

"D1-High"

"D2-High"

"D3-High"

...."D16-High"

or is there a wildcard we can put in place of the number? Catch is that sometimes it could be a single digit (1-9) or it could be a double digit (10-16).

You input is appreciated. Thank you.

Hello , kiwi friends!

I am trying to get Kiwi syslog 9.4 to work on windows server 2012 64bit but having problems with the service crashing then i try to start the kiwi syslog server console.

I have applied the kb fix for Microsoft .Net Framework 2 , before that i couldnt install kiwi syslog successfully becuse the service could not start.

http://knowledgebase.solarwinds.com/kb/questions/4386/

I have the following errors in the windows event viewer!

Error 7000: The Kiwi Syslog Server service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

Error 7009 : A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Kiwi Syslog Server service to connect.

Do you have a solution for this or could it be a new bug in windows server 2012 and the old dot net framework combined ?

Thanks in advance.

Kiwi SysLog Web Access Not Working after Upgradeing WhatsUpGold

Both applications have been running on the same server for several years. This is a Windows 2008 R2 64 bit machine, running the Army AGM.

WuG is now working 16.x

One of the things IPSwitch had me try to do, to fix WuG was install SQL Server Express 2008 R2

Kiwi Syslog (KSL) is version 9.3.4, the Kiwi Syslog Server Console "Is" working, only Web Access is down.

I tried to reinstall KSL, it worked, but somehow then WuG web access went down, I had to repair IIS and .NET

WuG uses 443, trying to get KSL to use 8088 (previously used) or 8888

When I try to access (even just Browse Web Site from IIS) I get:

"Error An unknown error occurred requesting resource /

When I click the link:

"Error An unknown error occurred requesting resource

/Gateway.aspx

At this point it just loops.

In IIS, I deleted the original website and created a new one.  Path I used is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Kiwi Syslog Web Access\html

Hi There,

I have now Kiwi syslog, in the events I can see only the IP address not hostnames for Cisco devices. Is there any specific SNMP configuration for this ?

Sending events from Cisco 3750 switch

$

Hello,

I am trying to send events from a Cisco 3750 switch to our Kiwi syslog server but am unsure of the config for the switch.

Should the following work:

Switch (config) # logging on
Switch (config) # logging Syslog Server IP
Switch (config) # logging trap error

This command will send (Error 3) events (0-3) to the Kiwi server via UDP514. Is this the supported method of transfer?

Should this work or is there a "Supported" switch configuration that I should be using.

Thank you,

Chris

Auto Purge Kiwi Database

I recently had my Kiwi Syslog server DBCache folder filled with over 20GB of cache files.

This was resolved by purging the cache with the "Purge Database Cache" button on the Kiwi menu, however I would love to do this daily or on a schedule when needed.

Is there an easy way to do this or is there an .exe file in the Syslogd folder that I can call on a schedule to perform this task ?

Thanks,

Kiwi Syslog + PFsense (parsing firewall log from 2 lines to 1 help)

PROBLEM - pfSense syslogs for firewall event is split into two lines when it is sent to Kiwi syslog app.

Is there a way to edit configuration or parsing script to parse the pfSense event as one similar to what the Splunk app can do see link http://www.basementpctech.com/content/pfsense-log-analysis-splunk

I understand that this is a PFsense tcpdump/issue, but I have already tried changing link http://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/1938 without any luck, it just don't work, tried all combinations of changes without any luck.

Pfsense version = 2.0.1-RELEASE, (amd64) , built on Mon Dec 12 18:16:13 EST 2011 ,FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE-p6

I would really appreciate any help with this, as I have already exhasted searching for a working soloution using Kiwi Syslog, and the only thing holding me back from purchasing this application.

Appreciate any help on this..........

New to Kiwi,

Trying to filter a single IP.

Using Hostname "10.10.0.201" (with case sensitive/without substring).

Messages are already being recorded and displayed in a CatchAll Rule filter but aren't being picked up by a separate rule with a single filter displaying to a different display screen.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Has anyone configured Active Directory Settings in Kiwi Syslog Server 9.4.1?  Below are the available Active Directory Settings available in the Web Access interface under the Admin Tab.

  • Domain URL: <Free Form Box>  My domain prepopulated correctly.
  • Authentication Type: <Free Form Box>.  Is this supposed to be NTLM, Kerberos, etc?
  • User Groups: <Free Form Box>  Does the format need to be LDAP based?

TIPS HOW TO - Kiwi Syslog Web Server with SSL and IIS 7

$
0
0

HI all,

My first post, i wish to share you some tips i found.

My main goal was to have access to the kiwi web site working with SSL...

But looking at Cassinni Web Server, it wasn't possible.

After searching more on this forum I found a post about a Rewriting Module with Apache ; so why dont we do it with IIS ?

Here we go !

Setup

- Win 2008 R2 , IIS 7 (with auth modules etc ...) , at least a working SSL certificate for the HTTPS listener (this post will not cover how PKI works, certs installation etc .... sorry).

- We will use the ARR 2.0 module x64 for IIS... See References at bottom for DL link, install it.

- A running Kiwi Syslog Server and the Web Access working on port 8088. Access via a browser works on this port.

Goal

- Enable the rewrite/proxy module in IIS

- Create a new IIS Web Site with HTTPS Listener on TCP Port 8090

- Create a rule to rewrite requests from 8090 to 8088

- When connecting on https://server:8090 , we would see Kiwi Web page.

HOW TO

1. Enabling the rewrite module

"C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe" set config  -section:system.webServer/proxy /enabled:"True"  /commit:apphost

2. New Site creation

set syslogwebdir=c:\inetpub\syslog

set syslogsitename=SYSLOG

"C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe" add site /name:"%syslogsitename%" /id:15 /bindings:https/*:8090: /physicalPath:"%syslogwebdir%"

3. Attach the SSL Certificate to the Binding 8090

3.1 With batch/cmd line(copy/past to a BAT file)

set CERTHASH=EnterYourHashHere

netsh http add sslcert ipport=0.0.0.0:8090 certhash=%CERTHASH% appid={00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

3.2 With IIS Manager (if you don't know where to read Hash Certificate).

-Right Click on SYSLOG site, modify Bindings.

-Select https 8090 * Listener > Modify.

-On the "box" SSL Certificate, choose your certificate for the server.

-"OK"

4. Create the rule (copy/past to a BAT file)

set syslogsitename=SYSLOG

set syslogrulename="Rewrite to Kiwi localhost 8088"

:: Rewrite Rule creation
"C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe" set config "%syslogsitename%" -section:system.webServer/rewrite/rules /+[name='%syslogrulename%']

:: Rule Parameters (one line)
"C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe" set config "%syslogsitename%" -section:system.webServer/rewrite/rules /[name='%syslogrulename%'].action.type:"Rewrite" /[name='%syslogrulename%'].match.url:"(.*)" /[name='%syslogrulename%'].action.url:"http://localhost:8088/{R:1}"

5. End

Test with your browser https://localhost:8090/

Now you can access from an "admin desktop" to this new SSL web site ...

Configure your firewalls to forbid access on port 8088 to this server (or/and configure the internal Windows Firewall of this server to allow only Localhost connection on 8088).

6. Refs Used

http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/489/using-the-application-request-routing-module/

---

At the beginning i was thinking to use http://mysite/syslog/ as a virtual directory, but I got some troubles with events.aspx and the rewrite module.

Inbound Rules was OK ; But Outbound Rules to rewrite URLS were not working as expected ; and filters in Kiwi were not working anymore.

That's why i decided to create a new site on another binding, with a root site ; so don't need to create Outbound Rules ...

HOWTO exclude on keyword(s) with windows logforwarder

$

0

I saw a posting back in May 2009 that was answered saying this isn't possible yet but was expected to be included in the next release.

Is there now a way to exclude events from being forwarded based on keywords in the message text? I'd like to reduce the "noise" level by not logging extremely routine events such as logins by my monitoring service account. Excluding by event id won't work for me as I only want to exclude certain logins.

TIA

Hi all,

New here, searched for discussions but found no entry on procurve switch(es).

The Procurve switches will not send any syslog messages (wiresharked the server)

Turned on logging on the switch: logging 'ip-address'

show debug

Debug Logging

  Source IP Selection: Outgoing Interface
  Destination:

     'ip-address' Kiwi Syslog server

       Protocol = UDP
       Port     = 514
     Facility = user
     Severity = info
     System Module = all-pass
     Priority Desc =

tried facility 'syslog' still nothing.

Only the Procurve switches will not send any syslog messages.

Other devices such as Cisco ASA's work fine.

Anyone ideas to solve this?

I am new to kiwi syslog server. Configured kiwi syslog server with default fields to log messages to MYSQL DB and working fine.

But I wish to parse the message and log to MYSQL DB using custom fields. I dont have any knowledge about scripting.

Sample log is shown below. Each field is separated by a single space character. The message content is highlighted in red.

2012-09-01 10:37:14 Local6.Warning HQ-IPS-01 DefensePro: 01-04-2012 19:49:25 WARNING 300000 Intrusions "BO-WINXP" TCP ACCTS-C-PC1 1607 ACCTS-C-PC2 80 3 Regular "DMZ-Policy" occur 1 0 N/A 0 N/A low drop FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-0001-00004F7B1BE5

Only the following things needs to be extracted and logged to DB.

MsgDate:  2012-09-01

MsgTime:  10:37:14

MsgHostname: HQ-IPS-01

AttackId:   300000

AttackType: Intrusions

AttackDesc: BO-WINXP

AttackSrc: ACCTS-C-PC1

AttackDst: ACCTS-C-PC2

The number of such logs that needs parsing by the script will be more.

Request provide me guidance in configuring this.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks all...
