Kiwi Syslog Web Access

$

Hi, I am new to Kiwi Syslog and I keep coming up with the attached error when installing the web access component.

I have upgraded Syslog Server to 9.4.1 and can't seem to get this going.  I don't know if it was ever working to begin with.

When I try and go to http://localhost:8088 I get an error that "The resource cannot be found".

Is there any pre requisites that need to be pre installed on the server for web access to run?  We have it running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Ent. SP1

Kiwi Syslog Server service starts then stops

When attempting to start the Kiwi Syslog Server service (on Windows 2008 R2), I get the message "The Kiwi Syslog Server service on [my server name] started and then stopped.  Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."  Any ideas what could be causing this?

Sending events from Cisco 3750 switch

Hello,

I am trying to send events from a Cisco 3750 switch to our Kiwi syslog server but am unsure of the config for the switch.

Should the following work:

Switch (config) # logging on
Switch (config) # logging Syslog Server IP
Switch (config) # logging trap error

This command will send (Error 3) events (0-3) to the Kiwi server via UDP514. Is this the supported method of transfer?

Should this work or is there a "Supported" switch configuration that I should be using.

Thank you,

Chris

How to Split Logs to Multiple Displays in Kiwi Syslog Server

SolarWinds's own Justin Finley just recorded a video tutorial that shows how to split logs into multiple displays in Kiwi Syslog Server.

External link to Jing: Multiple Displays - justinfinley's library

Video Guide:

  • 0:00 Unfiltered display (Display 00)
  • 0:10 Showing the rule that sends all messages to Display 00
  • 0:20 Changing the unfiltered display from Display 00 to Display 05
  • 0:25 Checking that the switch happened
  • 0:35 Adding a new filter rule looking for the word "logon" and sending it to Display 01
  • 1:20 Adding a new filter rule looking for the word "logoff" and sending it to Display 02
  • 2:05 Checking that the new filters work
  • 2:25 Renaming "Display 05" to "All Messages"
  • 2:45 Renaming "Display 01" to "Logon" and "Display 02" to "Logoff"
  • 3:10 Checking that the display renaming worked

Procurve switches not sending syslog messages in KIWI syslog

Hi all,

New here, searched for discussions but found no entry on procurve switch(es).

The Procurve switches will not send any syslog messages (wiresharked the server)

Turned on logging on the switch: logging 'ip-address'

show debug

Debug Logging

  Source IP Selection: Outgoing Interface
  Destination:
   Logging --
     'ip-address' Kiwi Syslog server

       Protocol = UDP
       Port     = 514
     Facility = user
     Severity = info
     System Module = all-pass
     Priority Desc =

tried facility 'syslog' still nothing.

Only the Procurve switches will not send any syslog messages.

Other devices such as Cisco ASA's work fine.

Anyone ideas to solve this?

TIA Jaap

Filter question: network range AND specific IPs

$

I currently have a rule set up to filter syslogs coming from a range of IPs (using the IP address > IP Mask setting). However, I also need to include IPs from a different network.

Example:

Currently I have 172.16.0.0 / 255.255.240.0

I need to also include specific IPs in another network, like 192.168.1.33, 192.168.1.78, etc.

I'm pretty sure I can do this with RegEx, but a bit lost from trying to parse the Help for that section.   Would it be something like "172.16.{1-254}.{1-254}" "192.168.1.33" "192.168.1.78" ?

setup ip address range filter

I am new to KiwiSysLog and I am not sure about the workings of it. Just tried to create 1 filter for one of my servers and it is still  "waiting for response from server" for 10 minutes. Do I want to create a "separate" filter for each of my 70+ servers? Also When I save the filter is it going to bring my network to a stand still retrieving the events?

Has anyone configured Active Directory Settings in Kiwi Syslog Server 9.4.1?  Below are the available Active Directory Settings available in the Web Access interface under the Admin Tab.

  • Domain URL: <Free Form Box>  My domain prepopulated correctly.
  • Authentication Type: <Free Form Box>.  Is this supposed to be NTLM, Kerberos, etc?
  • User Groups: <Free Form Box>  Does the format need to be LDAP based?

Kiwi SysLog Web Access Not Working after Upgradeing WhatsUpGold

Both applications have been running on the same server for several years. This is a Windows 2008 R2 64 bit machine, running the Army AGM.

WuG is now working 16.x

One of the things IPSwitch had me try to do, to fix WuG was install SQL Server Express 2008 R2

Kiwi Syslog (KSL) is version 9.3.4, the Kiwi Syslog Server Console "Is" working, only Web Access is down.

I tried to reinstall KSL, it worked, but somehow then WuG web access went down, I had to repair IIS and .NET

WuG uses 443, trying to get KSL to use 8088 (previously used) or 8888

When I try to access (even just Browse Web Site from IIS) I get:

"Error An unknown error occurred requesting resource /

When I click the link:

"Error An unknown error occurred requesting resource

/Gateway.aspx

At this point it just loops.

In IIS, I deleted the original website and created a new one.  Path I used is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Kiwi Syslog Web Access\html

Kiwi Syslog not receiving any message

Hello,

I just installed Syslog on a Windows 8 VM (ESXi 5.5).

However... I don't received any message from the router (Cisco RV042G) I want to log.

I tried the generic troubleshhoting :

• Check network connectivity by pinging from the sending device to the Syslog Server machine  => OK
• Check only one instance of Kiwi Syslog Server is running (Ctrl-Shift-Esc to get the task-list) => OK, only one
• Disable any personal firewall software such as ZoneAlarm or BlackIce => Disabled

• Use a sniffer to check if messages from the routing are reaching the PC => Yes, I can see them
• Check DNS resolution is working as expected by pinging a hostname from the Command Prompt => OK
• Check that there is a "Display" action setup for the facility and level you are expecting to receive messages on. => OK
• Send a test message to yourself by pressing Ctrl+T => Displayed
• Download a copy of the Free Syslog Server Message Generator (SyslogGen) from: www.kiwisyslog.com/downloads => Done
• Install SyslogGen and set it to send a message every second to the address 127.0.0.1 (local host). => Not displayed, and I don't see them in a local packet capture.
• Try sending messages with SyslogGen from another machine to the host running the Syslog Server => Not displayed, but see them on a packet capture (on Syslog PC)

Do you have any idea about the cause of this issue ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

How to load-balance Kiwi Syslog servers

$

0

I've got a set of 3 Kiwi servers sitting behind an F5, which I *thought* would effectively load balance the incoming syslog volume (I'm seeing around 5-8million messages per hour, and we haven't really turned everything on yet).

The problem, I just discovered, is that F5 load balances based on connections, not messages/packets. So round robin isn't round robin since most of my sending systems are passing new messages (and therefore creating a connection) more than even the lowest "disconnect after" option on the F5 (which is 1 second).

So my first server is maxing out at about 5million MPH and 0% buffer, while server 02 gets 2million messages and 80% buffer, and server 03 gets barely anything at all.

Has anyone else tried this, and have you found a work around (it doesn't have to be an F5. I just need the ability to create a pool of Kiwi servers and have all the systems in my enterprise sending to ONE ip address.

Thanks!

- Leon

I am evaluating Kiwi Syslogd to front-end and filter syslog traffic since we are having performance problems and service crashes using the NPM Syslog Service.  Here is the hardware platform:

Looking for a way to change the %MsgHost variable on a "hub" router to a "spoke" router name

$

Hello,

We have a classic Hub & Spoke network design and I'm trying to monitor the Wan status for each remote site.  I have a SNMP message that is sent from both Hub and Spoke router that I can filter on.  The issue that I'm having is if the Wan cct to the Spoke site goes down I won't receive a syslog message from it to alert on however the Hub site router will which is perfect.  The problem is that when I filter on the Hub message I use the %MsgHost variable and get the hostname of the Hub router...I have 60+ tunnels on the Hub router so these messages don't have any meeting in terms of identifiying the specific Spoke site.  I'm wondering if there is a custom variable that can do a look on a text file (similar to the "statichosts.txt") so I can map a Tunnel # to a Spoke Name?  Essentially I would like to monitor the state of the Wan cct from the Hub router by using log messages and adding the proper Spoke name.  Has anyone done somethign similar to this or have any other ideas?  Any information that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  Thx

Filtering out certain messages in Kiwi Syslog...

$

Hello,

I am in a situation where I need to filter out a certain string. It is a little complicated however. The string(s) I am trying to filter out usually looks like this:

"port D10-High collision or drop rate."

D10 is a device bay in a chassis and that is what we are really interested in here. There are 16 device bays so it can be D1, D2, D3....D16.

The only problem is that there is no space between D10 and "-High"

And we WOULD like to keep getting messaged that dont have the Dx part in it so we cant just filter out "collision or drop rate."

Is the only way to do this by putting 16 separate filters like so: ...?

"D1-High"

"D2-High"

"D3-High"

...."D16-High"

or is there a wildcard we can put in place of the number? Catch is that sometimes it could be a single digit (1-9) or it could be a double digit (10-16).

You input is appreciated. Thank you.
