Kiwi Syslog doesn't work with python

Hello,

I'm running into an issue where I have ActivePython installed, and I'm trying to use it with Kiwi Syslog Server, but I keep getting the same error:

Python is installed, Active python is installed.  I have tried creating a "Main()" function and a "main()" function to no avail.  My script is currently only doing the following:

def main():

     return "OK"

main()

I have tried a capitalized Main() as well.  Same error.

Any idea why this doesn't actually work?

We're considering purchasing the software, but only if we can get it to actually work with our pipeline.

Thanks in advance.

Can we use the Kiwi Syslog as a syslog forwarder.?

Hi,

We have a Linux box running the SDN services and acting as a Gateway. The vendor who provided this Linux box says that the have a restriction that it can forward the Syslog messages to only one Syslog server / collector.

We are currently in a situation that we are looking for a syslog server which can receive the syslog messages from this Linux box and then forward them to other syslog servers/collectors.

Is it possible to use the Kiwi Syslog server as a syslog forwarder. ?

Kiwi Syslog Service Keeps crashing

$

We have been experiencing an issue with our Kiwi Syslog Service crashing about every other day.  We are running version 9 and have a pretty standard setup where we are pushing syslogs from all of our devices in our network.  We have quite a bit of stuff logging to our Syslog server and are easily breaching the 200000 maximum message count throughout the day and getting email's.  We up'ed that and seem to be doing better however the syslog service continues to fail and will at times restart itself based off of the services recovery failure to restart the service but this is happening way to often.

Has anyone else seen this problem and if so, what kinds of things did you try/do?  Is this box just getting pegged so hard that it's causing the service to malfunction and trip up?  I'm not a Windows guy but is this issue even Windows related?  The only other application we have running on this server is CatTools and it runs clean with no service issues.  The systems team has taken a look at the server and believe this to be related only to the Kiwi application itself.

Next Steps: I'm thinking of removing and rebuilding the Kiwi 9 application from scratch to see if this corrects the issue but wanted some direction from the forum if anyone has any good ideas/suggestions.

Thankyou in advance!

Kiwi Syslog "Check for update..." error

We are new to Kiwi Syslog and are just getting things configured.  We are on version 9.6.1.6.  One thing I immediately noticed is that running the "Check for update..." results in the following error: "An error occurred while checking for available software updates.  Check internet connectivity or proxy server settings.".

We have no proxy server enabled.  From the server with Kiwi Syslog, I have Internet connectivity via a browser with no problems.

From Kiwi's error log, I see the following line associated with the failed update: "Info: An error occurred while checking for available software updates.  Moved Temporarily [20152] - Resource: http://downloads.solarwinds.com/solarwinds/Release/Kiwi/Syslog/currentkiwisyslogversion.xml".  If I paste that URL into a browser, it returns the following:

<?xml version="1.0"?>

-<KiwiSyslogServerVersionManifest Version="1">

<CurrentVersion Version="9.6.1" Link="http://downloads.solarwinds.com/solarwinds/Release/Kiwi/Syslog/Kiwi-Syslog-Server-9.6.1.zip" DateReleased="2017-05-01"> New in 9.6.1 update ------------------------------ * Kiwi Syslog Server no longer creates large SolarWinds.SyslogServer.Engine.log fileswhich consume significant disk space. * Kiwi Syslog Server diagnostic information shows the correct buffer usage for all types of messages * If you do not see a "Download Update" button below, copy and paste the following link into your browser to download: http://downloads.solarwinds.com/solarwinds/Release/Kiwi/Syslog/Kiwi-Syslog-Server-9.6.1.zip</CurrentVersion>

</KiwiSyslogServerVersionManifest>

I can then paste the .zip link it references into a browser and get the zip file to download (although it appears to be the same version we already have).

Has anyone experienced the same issue or know how to fix it?

Thanks!

Unable to receive Syslog on Solarwinds Orion

Hi,

We are unable to receive any Syslog messages from any of the nodes added in ORION. When checked with Kiwi Syslog, they are being received. So there's no issue of windows firewall block. Even we restarted the syslog and trap services.

When we are generating the Syslog locally on the orion server it is captured in ORION but nothing from remote.

Please guide.

How to Split Log Files by IP Address and Date in Kiwi Syslog Server

SolarWinds's own Justin Finley just recorded a video tutorial that shows how to split logs into multiple files by IP address and date in Kiwi Syslog Server.  Specifically, this syslog server tutorial shows how to store logs in separate folders for each source IP address, and then shows how to keep separate log files for each day within those folders.  (e.g., "D:\logs\192.168.000.001\Log2012-07-13.txt")

External link to Jing: autosplit - justinfinley's library

Video Guide:

  • 0:00 Opening Kiwi Syslog's configuration dialog
  • 0:15 Using an "AutoSplit" variable of "IP Address (4 octets)" (%IPAdd4) in the log path to split logs by IP address
  • 0:40 Using an "AutoSplit" variable of "ISO Date" (%DateISO) in the log path to split logs by date

Forescout NAC & syslog

$

We have a couple of Forescout NAC devices. They are configured to forward to our local Kiwi servers, and then rules on the Kiwi are supposed to be sending warning & above messages to the main Orion server. Unfortunately, I have oodles (technical term) of info messages showing in the main repository. I'm pretty sure the Kiwi rules are correct (they are working for other devices) but our on site security guy isn't a Forescout expert, so he hasn't been able to see anything wrong on the NAC itself. I'm thinking we have it set to forward directly to Orion under a different facility, but that's a pure guess. From what I've seen of the NAC's SYSLOG setup there aren't drop downs to look at different facilities.

Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks in advance!

How to search all log files

$

Hi everyone,

Can someone confirm that both the Kiwi Syslog Service Manager console and the Kiwi Syslog Web Access will only display messages for current log files.  Therefore, a find or filter will only bring up hits for the most current log files, correct?

Assuming that is the case, I found a thread that mentions WinGREP as a freeware to search all log files on your hard drive.  Wouldn't it be helpful for this capability to be integrated into Kiwi Syslog Server?

For example, I am importing all Windows Security events from all domain controllers into Kiwi Syslog Server.  I want to be able to search for a username and the phrase "user account is locked out" for as far back as I have logs.  How do I do this easily?

Thanks,

Tony

Kiwi Syslog not receiving any message

Hello,

I just installed Syslog on a Windows 8 VM (ESXi 5.5).

However... I don't received any message from the router (Cisco RV042G) I want to log.

I tried the generic troubleshhoting :

• Check network connectivity by pinging from the sending device to the Syslog Server machine  => OK
• Check only one instance of Kiwi Syslog Server is running (Ctrl-Shift-Esc to get the task-list) => OK, only one
• Disable any personal firewall software such as ZoneAlarm or BlackIce => Disabled

• Use a sniffer to check if messages from the routing are reaching the PC => Yes, I can see them
• Check DNS resolution is working as expected by pinging a hostname from the Command Prompt => OK
• Check that there is a "Display" action setup for the facility and level you are expecting to receive messages on. => OK
• Send a test message to yourself by pressing Ctrl+T => Displayed
• Download a copy of the Free Syslog Server Message Generator (SyslogGen) from: www.kiwisyslog.com/downloads => Done
• Install SyslogGen and set it to send a message every second to the address 127.0.0.1 (local host). => Not displayed, and I don't see them in a local packet capture.
• Try sending messages with SyslogGen from another machine to the host running the Syslog Server => Not displayed, but see them on a packet capture (on Syslog PC)

Do you have any idea about the cause of this issue ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Forward syslog events to QRadar

I'm trying to forward events from Kiwi Syslog to QRadar SIEM.

In Kiwi Syslog setup, I created an Action: Forward to another host; gave it the QRadar appliance's IP as the Destination IP; selected "Retain the original source address of the message"; clicked the Test button to verify the configuration and got a gree checkmark.

The test event was the only event received by the QRadar.  None of the events I'm forwarding have been received as incoming logs on QRadar.

I've tried this with and without adding the Kiwi Syslog servers as log sources in QRadar.

Do I need to install a universal DSM on the Kiwi Syslog servers?

no log shows on Kiwi Syslog Web Access

I am having kiwi syslog 9.5 installed.

I choose to install as service and also installed the web access.

The syslog console opened fine and I see logs on displayed and also to file.

However, with the web access, it shows nothing (what so ever).  I checked the Setup on Console Manager and see that under Rules i have 2 exact same option for "Log to Syslog Web Access".  Everything under that options checked.

But I still see no log on web access.

1) I tried to uncheck all the "Log to Syslog Web Access".

2) Closed the Console Manager and reopened it

3) Checked mark one of the 2 optioins "Log to Syslog Web Access" and everything below it.

4) Opened and log in to web access -> Still see nothing.

any idea?

Kiwi Syslog not receiving SNMP Traps

$

Hi all.

I have just installed Kiwi Syslog Server 9.5 on a test machine to evaluate its suitability for a project I'm working on. It's currently still running in 14-day Evaluation mode.

We can't seem to get it to receive SNMP traps at all. No matter what we do, netstat shows nothing listening on UDP port 162. SNMPv1 traps are being sent to the server, and we can see them in Wireshark arriving at the server, but Kiwi isn't listening for them.

In desparation, we tried enabling the Windows SNMP Trap service (although we understand this isn't required?) and this 'absorbed' the traps, but nothing appeared in Kiwi.

The test machine is running Windows 7 (32-bit) with the Windows Firewall switched off.

Should the 14-day Evaluation be able to receive SNMP traps?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

'How much traffic can Kiwi Syslog Server handle?'

according to the FAQ.. Our software is built and tested to support more than two million messages an hour without tuning.   (That would support more than 500 machines each sending one message a second.)

This blog says to split out your busiest syslog source...

But what do you do when a single source exceeds 600-1000 messages per second? eg., upstream syslog aggregator or firewalls

Unable to bind secure TCP listener to port 6514 There might be a problem with the certificate provided

$

I set up Secure TCP port 6514 in in Kiwi Syslog Server version 9.5.0.332.

I'm getting the following error :

Unable to bind secure TCP listener to port 6514 There might be a problem with the certificate provided

I'm using a self-signed certificate that I created  in IIS.

Why doesn't the error message tell exactly what is wrong with the certificate?

Could somebody suggest a solution or a workaround?

Thanks!
