Syslog Server - Flag/Counter Time Interval - Not working as expected.

$

Hi I have just upgraded to 9.3.4 syslog server and I am having trouble with setting up new actions with timers counters.

I have approx 20 rules defined and approx 5 of them need a Time Interval Filter.

These filter syslogs from various cisco hardware, one being Fan Faults.

The intial Filter is set to Include = "%FAN" "%ENVIRONMENT" - works a treat

the 2nd filter is a Flag/Counter for Time Interval - currently set to 60 mins

Actions are . 1 = display in ErrorFan,

                     2. Send snmp trap to server 1

                     3. forward syslog to server 2

When the timer is enabled the syslogs only show 1 every 60 mins for all devices. We currently have 8 bits of kits reporting fan rotation errors etc, and with the timer set I am only seeing the same device or two every hour - not all 8.

When i remove the timer the syslogs come through every 30sec-1min intreval from each device.

In the Syslog Help guide it states:

"When a message arrives from the host "central-router.company.com" that
contains the words "link down" in the text, the first filter (Message text) will
be true. The Time interval filter is then processed. The first time the Time
interval filter is processed, the result will be true, and the actions that
follow will be performed. A countdown timer using the specified value is
started. In the above example it is 15 minutes. If another message arrives from
the same host that contains the words "link down", the first filter (Message
text) will again be true. If the countdown timer has not reached zero, the Time
interval filter will return false and the actions following will not be
performed."

I cannot get this to work 'per host' it just stops all messages coming through from ll devices except 1.

So I dont think it is correctly storing 'counter/flag' for each host and is just setting the filter for the first message received from any host.

I would also like to know if 60 mins is the maximum, as this can still be quite annoying for backend systems, and It would be great to see this increase to maybe 3 or 4 hours - or to be able to put a once a day for each host filter on. Is there a way around this? for instance can i put a 2nd time interval timer on (when it works properly) for a further 60mins etc so i would get 120 mins in total?

Kiwi Syslog Email Alerts & Filters

Hi all,

I just have some questions around setting up email alerts and filters in Kiwi Syslog.

  1. What is the average processing time from receiving a syslog message to it being processed and emailed out? I'm seeing delays of up to 30 seconds or more before I am even seeing it in the email log within Kiwi, then you add the time it takes for your mail server to actually deliver the message. Curious to see what others are seeing?
  2. When creating filters and actions within a rule, the filters look to be processed as "AND" instead of "OR". E.g. If I have a single rule called "Logon Success Events", with an action to email the alert, and a filter to catch the first devices message which might be "logon successful" and the second devices message "successful logon", it appears to not work. It appears I have to create a new rule for each different message string? Is there a way for multiple filters under a rule to be processed as "OR" and not "AND"?

Many thanks!

Kiwi Syslog Server HA (High Availability)

$

Hi Folks, I am starting to evaulate Kiwi Syslog Server and one of the main requirements will be how we provision HA (High Availability)

I have seen some posts regarding the use of LB's (Load Balancers) but these posts are pretty old and don't go into that much detail.

I'm hoping that someone can point me in thr right direction.

If we use 2 LB's in a cluster (probably Netscalers) all clients will connect to the LB VIP.

I'm "guessing at this stage" that the LB's will send all trafiic to one of 2 Kiwi Syslog servers (lets call them Kiwi A and Kiwi B where Kiwi A is the current live server)

We are resilient against the loss of a LB (as theye are operating in a HA Cluster)

If we lose Kiwi A, traffic will be redirected to Kiwi B.

Thoughts/Comments

If we lose a LB, we will probably lose syslog records - I don't think its possible to avoid this (even if we use TCP)?

If we lose Kiwi A, syslog records will be redirected to Kiwi B by the LB (again, I think we could lose some syslog records)

If we need old logfiles on Kiwi A (that isn't now available) - I guess we can't unless Kiwi A writes to a CIFS share (that Kiwi B also writes to) ???

If we don't have access to a direct CIFS share, could we use Windows DFS (so that Kiwi A is replicating to Kiwi B and vice-versa) - again, I think we will miss records.

So basically, if we lose Kiwi A, and the LB starts writing to Kiwi B, Kiwi B will have the replicated records (via DFS from Kiwi A)

Kiwi B should pretty much have almost all of the records available (would need to test this against busy input devices)

Before we go down this road and start testing, It would be great if anyone has any information/feedback/comments  they could provide.

Many Thanks.

Unable to login to KiwiSyslog Webaccess

Hi all !

past weekend we were unable to login to to Kiwi Syslog webaccess as a result of the follow error message:

" Session initialization error

The session has been abandoned.

I have taken a look at the errorlog of Kiwi and noticed that there are three messages regarding this error:

I start/stopped the webserver service without any success on saturday.
This morning i tried to access the page again and I got correctly redirected to http://10.x.x.x:8088/gateway.aspx.
At the moment the login is possible but I'm concerned that my database file may be corrupted!

Do you have any suggestions for me?

Thanks in advance!

Administrator Password Missed; Other way to login

Hi,

I have recently been handed over Kiwi Syslog server to manage which has both Fat Client and Web Server. Fat Client is directly logged in however Web console could not be logged in. When I checked regarding the password of "Administrator", I have been informed that resource handling it has left long ago and there is no one to tell.

Is there a way we can reset the password of Administrator or create a new user from Syslog Fat Client. I cant raise the request with Support as we do not have active maintanence.

Thanks,

Syed

Kiwi Syslog Server service starts then stops

When attempting to start the Kiwi Syslog Server service (on Windows 2008 R2), I get the message "The Kiwi Syslog Server service on [my server name] started and then stopped.  Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."  Any ideas what could be causing this?

Kiwi Syslog not receiving any message

Hello,

I just installed Syslog on a Windows 8 VM (ESXi 5.5).

However... I don't received any message from the router (Cisco RV042G) I want to log.

I tried the generic troubleshhoting :

• Check network connectivity by pinging from the sending device to the Syslog Server machine  => OK
• Check only one instance of Kiwi Syslog Server is running (Ctrl-Shift-Esc to get the task-list) => OK, only one
• Disable any personal firewall software such as ZoneAlarm or BlackIce => Disabled

• Use a sniffer to check if messages from the routing are reaching the PC => Yes, I can see them
• Check DNS resolution is working as expected by pinging a hostname from the Command Prompt => OK
• Check that there is a "Display" action setup for the facility and level you are expecting to receive messages on. => OK
• Send a test message to yourself by pressing Ctrl+T => Displayed
• Download a copy of the Free Syslog Server Message Generator (SyslogGen) from: www.kiwisyslog.com/downloads => Done
• Install SyslogGen and set it to send a message every second to the address 127.0.0.1 (local host). => Not displayed, and I don't see them in a local packet capture.
• Try sending messages with SyslogGen from another machine to the host running the Syslog Server => Not displayed, but see them on a packet capture (on Syslog PC)

Do you have any idea about the cause of this issue ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Forward syslog events to QRadar

I'm trying to forward events from Kiwi Syslog to QRadar SIEM.

In Kiwi Syslog setup, I created an Action: Forward to another host; gave it the QRadar appliance's IP as the Destination IP; selected "Retain the original source address of the message"; clicked the Test button to verify the configuration and got a gree checkmark.

The test event was the only event received by the QRadar.  None of the events I'm forwarding have been received as incoming logs on QRadar.

I've tried this with and without adding the Kiwi Syslog servers as log sources in QRadar.

Do I need to install a universal DSM on the Kiwi Syslog servers?

sys log server errors "FormatMessage failed with 1815" help please!!

Good day Community,

I am experiencing an urgent issue. The sys log server forwarder is forwarding the following message to the KIWI sys log server. The actual security logs are showing the correct information, however the message below is being showed. I thought it was the server, but wen I added another sever to forward security logs, I am getting the same message as shown below.

Can anyone who have encountered this message or know how to resolve this issue. The security logs are on the server and I can view them using event viewer properly and audit logs are reflecting fine.

I would really appreciate your humble assistance or comments.

How to Split Log Files by IP Address and Date in Kiwi Syslog Server

SolarWinds's own Justin Finley just recorded a video tutorial that shows how to split logs into multiple files by IP address and date in Kiwi Syslog Server.  Specifically, this syslog server tutorial shows how to store logs in separate folders for each source IP address, and then shows how to keep separate log files for each day within those folders.  (e.g., "D:\logs\192.168.000.001\Log2012-07-13.txt")

Video Guide:

  • 0:15 Using an "AutoSplit" variable of "IP Address (4 octets)" (%IPAdd4) in the log path to split logs by IP address
  • 0:40 Using an "AutoSplit" variable of "ISO Date" (%DateISO) in the log path to split logs by date

I am having kiwi syslog 9.5 installed.

I choose to install as service and also installed the web access.

The syslog console opened fine and I see logs on displayed and also to file.

However, with the web access, it shows nothing (what so ever).  I checked the Setup on Console Manager and see that under Rules i have 2 exact same option for "Log to Syslog Web Access".  Everything under that options checked.

But I still see no log on web access.

1) I tried to uncheck all the "Log to Syslog Web Access".

2) Closed the Console Manager and reopened it

3) Checked mark one of the 2 optioins "Log to Syslog Web Access" and everything below it.

4) Opened and log in to web access -> Still see nothing.

any idea?

TCP Syslog Does Not Work in Latest Version

I use kiwi syslog server a lot for testing syslog.  It seems like in the latest version there are issues with TCP.  I'm verifying with the Kiwi Syslog Message Generator.  Seems like with syslog server version 9.4.1 TCP connects and works, but in latest version 9.6.3 it does not connect for some reason. When I try to connect TCP with message generator it says "TCP session remotely disconnected" using the same tool the same exact way, it works with version 9.4.1. I'm using the syslog message generator tool on the same machine as the syslog server.  Is this a known issue, or am I missing something?  Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.  Thank you very much.

I need a solution for formatting an IP Address or MAC Address.  I see that some records correctly format the IP address or the MAC address, but I need one record returned with the correctly formatted IP address and MAC address so that I can identify Internet traffic from a device.  Is there a solution for getting these items formatted?
