Perl script to parse SNMP trap and set VarCustom01

$

0

I was trying the following script but I get no variable when trying to parse this way:

sub Main{

     $source = $Fields->{VarRawMessageText};

     my ($IP) = $source =~ /^\S+/;

     $Fields->{VarCustom01} = $IP;

     return "OK";

}

The VarRawMessageText should be the following: 127.0.0.1 1.2.131.24.14.1 etc etc

If I remove tags the agent_ip= is not that and the above regex should be correct but the script is not parsing it.  I am using 8.3 of Kiwi (I do intend to upgrade but it's a production box)

I created a rule to run this script in the action and then I am calling %VarCustom01 to forward as the originator IP.  The reason is I am forwarding SNMP traps from Cisco Prime to Kiwi and then to NCM.  (there's some crazy logic as to why)

Message filter on a source ip in Real time

$

I am trying to apply a filter on the syslog messages i am receiving from a firewall for any kind of Denied traffic. For this, i am required to apply a counter of 100 to denied messages from a specific source ipin real time. Since there are lot of denied messages from several IPs, the counter can be reached easily and trigger the action which is of no use. I want to track the count for a matching source ip inside the message content.

Is there any expression i can use to match a string pattern at a specific location again and again to increase the counter?

Thank you in advance for your valuable input.

Currently Kiwi Syslog Server 9.x release supports syslog based on RFC 3164. Are there any plans to add support for RFC 5424 in a future release?

Thank you,

Kiwi Syslog Service Keeps crashing

$

We have been experiencing an issue with our Kiwi Syslog Service crashing about every other day.  We are running version 9 and have a pretty standard setup where we are pushing syslogs from all of our devices in our network.  We have quite a bit of stuff logging to our Syslog server and are easily breaching the 200000 maximum message count throughout the day and getting email's.  We up'ed that and seem to be doing better however the syslog service continues to fail and will at times restart itself based off of the services recovery failure to restart the service but this is happening way to often.

Has anyone else seen this problem and if so, what kinds of things did you try/do?  Is this box just getting pegged so hard that it's causing the service to malfunction and trip up?  I'm not a Windows guy but is this issue even Windows related?  The only other application we have running on this server is CatTools and it runs clean with no service issues.  The systems team has taken a look at the server and believe this to be related only to the Kiwi application itself.

Next Steps: I'm thinking of removing and rebuilding the Kiwi 9 application from scratch to see if this corrects the issue but wanted some direction from the forum if anyone has any good ideas/suggestions.

Thankyou in advance!

The engineering effort on Kiwi Syslog Server (KSS) v9.4 Release Candidate has been completed. RC is the last step before general availability and is a chance for existing customers to get the newest functionality before it is available to everyone else.

You will find the latest version on your customer portal in the Release Candidate section.

Here is the content of this RC version:

  • Moving to a new web server
    This change brings a lot of new functionality "for free". Examples:
  • Active Directory authentication for web access
  • Alerting for Message Queue Monitor
    Be notified when the number of messages in the message queue crosses certain threshold. This indicates there might be performance problems and gives you chance to take an action before messages get dropped.

Problem with filtering in Kiwi Syslog

$

I am setting up a kiwi syslog server.  Running into a problem with the filtering not working the way I would expect.  I have used Kiwi but that was several years ago.  I have setup a display for a specific switch and have tried several different filter possibilities but still getting syslog messages on the display that dont belong to the switch I am trying to watch.

I have tried a ip address - simple filter with the ip address of the switch "10.1.1.2".  On the cisco switch, I have used the command logging source-interface vlan 254 which should send out the syslog messages using the ip address in the simple filter I setup.  I have also tried the hostname option with the hostname of the switch "Switch1" but same problem.

It has got to be something simple but so far I havent found the problem.  Since this is the free version, I know I cant call Solar Winds support.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

KIWI EMail Alerts

$

Hello,

I have been working with Kiwi and trying to setup custom email alerts for a number of devices and have ran into an issue and wondering if anyone has any insight for me.

For Example if I setup the following email alerting Rule Set:

Critical Devices

     + Filters

          + IP Range = 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.55

          + Priority = All Facilities (Emerg + Alert)
          + Flags/Counters = Time Interval (60 Minutes)

     + Actions

          + E-Mail Message (MyEmail@email.com)

So with the above example I am just looking to get alerts for my critical devices, in this example they are all in the sub-net above, and the time interval is set to ensure that I am not getting bombarded with a ton of alerts in a short period of time.

The issue:

If I have two different devices that are triggering critical events at the same point in time, I will only get alerts from one of those devices based on the rule set above.

The Question:

Is there a way to configure ONE rule set to alert on a series of devices, and the flags and counters will only come into effect if its the SAME device sending the critical message within the time frame specified? Without creating a separate rule set for each critical device?

My Thoughts:

My Assumption is no this is not possible without creating different rule sets. If this is the case, I was thinking maybe the only way to accomplish what I want is VIA a script, my only issue would be is that if I create a script, I am unsure what command I would use to get Kiwi to stop processing the actions.

Ex. If critical alert comes in

          check if alert has been processed in last 60 minutes

               if yes

                    Exit

               else

                    Send alert

              end if

     end if

Obviously that is very basic, but perhaps it can get the idea across. My issue is that I have no idea what I can do VIA script to tell Kiwi to stop processing actions after my script if my script determines the alerts have been sent in the last 60 minutes.

Sorry if this is confusing, please let me know if I should clarify anything.

Sending events from Cisco 3750 switch

Hello,

I am trying to send events from a Cisco 3750 switch to our Kiwi syslog server but am unsure of the config for the switch.

Should the following work:

Switch (config) # logging on
Switch (config) # logging Syslog Server IP
Switch (config) # logging trap error

This command will send (Error 3) events (0-3) to the Kiwi server via UDP514. Is this the supported method of transfer?

Should this work or is there a "Supported" switch configuration that I should be using.

Thank you,

Chris

Hello Forum

Newbie here.

I have a need to log to file every 15 minutes. At the moment I can do by utilising the rotate log file to 15 minutes which is cumbersome as I will get logfilename.txt.001 through to logfilename.txt.096 for a 24 hour period. Is there a way where the rotation log files can get its timestamp from the creation date and time?

Kiwi Syslog not displaying Cisco ASA 5505 syslogs

$

I have a Cisco ASA 5505 that is setup to send syslogs to a remote syslog server.

I have kiwi syslog (free) installed on a Windows 2003 R2 Server and it is listening on UDP port 514. The syslog server also is my Ciscoworks v3.2 server.

I can ONLY see the Ciscoworks log files and not the ASA. I only want to display the ASA log files.

I have googled, read the user guide, and search the forum and cannot find any procedure that I can tweak Kiwi to log the syslog files from my ASA which is being used as a VPN concentrator.

Any ideas?

Rule and filter structure

Hi there,

New to Kiwi Syslog and need help setting up rules and grouping devices.  Interested to know what the best practices are and what others are doing.

What I'm doing so far for example, is setup one rule for switches, one for vSphere, one for BladeCenters, etc.  This way, I can output similar devices to one display console, have different file rotation rules for grouped devices, and organize the log file structure into meaningful subfolders.  Is this the best way to go about it?

This seems to work until I get a new device that I'm not aware of pointed to the syslog server.  I assume without a rule that passes, the log from a host is dropped.  I think I need a rule at the end with a filter that says if you don't meet the criteria of all the other rules and filters, then use this one.  How do I do this?  Hopefully this makes sense.

Thanks!

How to disable the debug mode on Kiwi Syslog Server

My customoer uses the Kiwi syslog server ver9.2.1 and he ask me how to disable the debug more.

I checked the Manage menu on Kiwi Syslog Service Manger and I could onfirm the action of "Enable Service Debug mode(Maneger->Debug options->Enable Service Debug Mode) only and I could confirm the disable action.

If I tried to perform the action "Enable Service Debug Mode", can we stop it?  If we can be disable the Debug mode, I want to know how to disable the Debug Mode.

Kiwi Syslog + PFsense (parsing firewall log from 2 lines to 1 help)

PROBLEM - pfSense syslogs for firewall event is split into two lines when it is sent to Kiwi syslog app.

Is there a way to edit configuration or parsing script to parse the pfSense event as one similar to what the Splunk app can do see link http://www.basementpctech.com/content/pfsense-log-analysis-splunk

I understand that this is a PFsense tcpdump/issue, but I have already tried changing link http://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/1938 without any luck, it just don't work, tried all combinations of changes without any luck.

Pfsense version = 2.0.1-RELEASE, (amd64) , built on Mon Dec 12 18:16:13 EST 2011 ,FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE-p6

I would really appreciate any help with this, as I have already exhasted searching for a working soloution using Kiwi Syslog, and the only thing holding me back from purchasing this application.

Appreciate any help on this..........

Procurve switches not sending syslog messages in KIWI syslog

$

Hi all,

New here, searched for discussions but found no entry on procurve switch(es).

The Procurve switches will not send any syslog messages (wiresharked the server)

Turned on logging on the switch: logging 'ip-address'

show debug

Debug Logging

  Source IP Selection: Outgoing Interface
  Destination:
   Logging --
     'ip-address' Kiwi Syslog server

       Protocol = UDP
       Port     = 514
     Facility = user
     Severity = info
     System Module = all-pass
     Priority Desc =

tried facility 'syslog' still nothing.

Only the Procurve switches will not send any syslog messages.

Other devices such as Cisco ASA's work fine.

Anyone ideas to solve this?

TIA Jaap
